The following are some disparate notes about a William Sneed or Snead living in Wilkes Co., GA, by the 1820s. Other researchers and descendants may have more complete and accurate information about him. I welcome additional information and corrections. It's possible this William is son of a John and Mary Snead who deeded land to Danl. Gunnells, all of Wilkes Co., on 3 Sept. 1786. The deed says that John Snead bought the land from Joseph Gunnells (DB CC, 18). This is evidently the John Snead who is taxed in McCain's dist., Wilkes Co., for 700 acres in 1785. He appears again in Wilkes in 1786 (Elsberry's dist.) and 1787 (same dist.) with 580 acres. After that, he is not on the Wilkes tax list, though the 1792 list says that Elijah Clarke's land on Hard Labor Creek adj. John Snead.

A Dudley Snead who served under Elijah Clarke during the Revolution also had land adjoining Elijah Clarke in Wilkes Co. He was apparently son of Samuel Snead (1723-1806) and Jane Dudley of Person Co., NC, and had a brother named John. Is the John with wife Mary in Wilkes Co. records Dudley's brother? Dudley's Wilkes Co. land warrant is dated 10 Aug. 1785. There are indicators Dudley may have lived in Wilkes Co. in the early 1790s and then have settled in Burke Co., or perhaps he lived permanently in Burke while having landholdings in Wilkes (and Franklin and Washington, later Hancock, Co., GA.

In the 1821 GA land lottery, William Sneed drew 2 lots from Wilkes Co. He was in Capt. David P. Hillhouse's Co. of Maj. Thomas Gordon's Battallion, 164th Dist.

An Archibald Sneed also drew two lots from the same district. Is this Archibald Henderson Snead, son of Stephen and Mary Williams Snead of Granville Co., NC? Is he also the Archibald Snead who who m. Mary Roddy on 24 Dec. 1828 in Wilkes Co., GA? If so, I have his second spouse (from Daniel Mahar) as Mary Latham, rather than Roddy. Note that his brother Samuel Farrar Sneed married Octavia A. Roddy in Wilkes Co. on the same date.

Archibald Henderson Snead was a nephew of the Dudley Snead discussed above. Stephen Snead who married Mary Williams was Dudley's brother.

A Mary Sneed who appears to be born 1790-1800 is on the 1830 census in Wilkes Co. She appears to be the person of this name on the 1850 census in Wilkes Co., b. 1798, GA. In 1832, she draws from Wilkes lot 729, dist. 12 in Murray Co. If this is Mary Roddy Snead, why is Archibald not listed as head of their household in 1830?

In the 1832 land lottery, Mary Snead, widow, of Moseley's dist. in Wilkes Co., draws land. On 6 Feb. 1833, Mary Snead of Wilkes Co. deeds to Alexander Pope, Samuel Barnett, Augustine H. Gibson, Garnet Andrews, and Hopkins W. Brewer the land she had drawn in Lumpkin Co., lot 729 in the 12th dist. The land brought MS $15,000, which makes me think that the buyers suspected it had gold on it. he deed was signed by Mary, and wit. by John H. Dyson and Joseph Bosen in Wilkes Co., and recorded on 9 Feb.

1850 census, Wilkes: William M. Sneed, b. 1845, GA, son of James Roddy Sneed, b. 1819, GA.
