Looking for any information about Samuel Carpenter who married c1815 to Sophia Snack {Sneck, Schneck}. They appear to be the Samuel Carpenter family enumerated in Baltimore Co. MD from 1820 through 1850. Sophia was probably daughter of Henry Snack, per estate records dated 1849 in Baltimore.

hello Terri,

I am working on my Snack line, my line came from PA to Ohio. I do believe that the Baltimore county, MD Snack's are related to the PA Snack's. I had been going some census's in 1790 up to 1820 in PA. It seems the Snack name might have been Schneck to begin with. I had asked a Schneck researcher about it, of course, he denies it, even though I had proof it was the same people. Do you have anymore information on your Snack line? Like where they came from and so forth.......I do know they came from Germany, but not sure from where. Hope to hear back from ya.

Hi Jamie --- I haven't gotten any more information about the Snack family. You are the only person who has responded to the post. I would agree that the Baltimore Snacks could have come from PA -- there were other families from PA in the MD census. Samuel Carpenter was listed among the heirs of Henry Snack in Baltimore in 1849. Henry Snack was born c1810-1820 per the 1840 census. In 1870 Samuel Carpenter's widow Sophia Carpenter lived in Baltimore with Florence Snack. These records are what made we wonder if Sophia's maiden name was Snack. If any of this sounds familiar, I would be interested in knowing where in PA the Snack's came from, in hopes of finding Samuel Carpenter's origin. Thanks! ---Terry

hello Terri,

Thanks for getting back with me.....you aren't the only person I have had contact with about the Snack name, I have spoke with a woman in Indiana who descends from a Peter Snack, he either was born in Germany or Pa. I told her that we might be distantly related.....since mine came from there also, and went to Muskingum county, Ohio. I have had someone do a little research for me, now this is only speculation and not proven yet, but believe the Snack name was Schneck, which from census's I have seen, they spelled the name Schneck to Snack in Northampton county, Pa....a long time Schneck researcher told me its not the same people, but I do believe he is wrong on that one. I have gone thru many early census's and its the same guys that were there the previous 10 years. I do still believe that the Snack name is a short version or a soundex version of the real surname......possibly Schneck, Sneck, and a couple of others.
Hope to hear back from ya.

In 1870 Sophia Carpenter, whom I believe was nee Snack, was enumerated in this household in Baltimore City, MD:

John H. Snack, age 28, born in MD
Elizabeth Snack, 28, MD
Sarah Snack, 5, MD
Anna M. Snack, 7, MD
Florence Snack, 7/12, MD
Sophia Carpenter, 87, MD

In 1860, the above John H. Snack appears to be this one enumerated with his parents in Baltimore City MD:

Henry Snack, 44, MD
Sarah A. Snack, 41, MD
John H. Snack, 21, MD
Susanna Snack, 19, MD
William Snack, 14, MD
Mary V. Snack, 12, MD
Georgeann Snack, 10, MD
Josephine Snack, 7, MD
Emma Snack, 2, MD

If you find any connections between your Snack family and the Carpenter family, that is the line I'm most interested in. Thanks,

Terry
