I think I may information on your Jesse Smothers. I have a Smothers family tree on here and I have at least 2 Jessie Smothers, The youngest was born in 1935 and was living in Columbus, Georgia. He had an Uncle born in 1908 named Jesse Smothers (died in 1978) and a Grandfather named Jesse Smothers born in 1884. If either of these fit your Fathers description then this means that we are related and there is a huge family of Smothers that would love to meet you.
These Smothers come from a small town south of Americus Georgia, called Sumter City. There are still a few Smothers in the area. Please let me know if this sounds like your Father and/or give more information to see if there is a match with my Smothers family.

I have researched my family tree and I have found a Jessie Smothers Sr. and Jessie Smothers Jr. that lived in Columbus, Georgia. They were originally from Sumter County, Georgia, by way of South Carolina and Virginia. Not sure if this is the person that you are looking for, however, the majority of that family lives in Sumter County, Georgia. Do you have a birth date or a parent name for your Jessie?

Jocque

Wayne, I just found your post on Elisha, I am related through Martha M.D. Smothers and would appreciate information on Elisha you would be willing to share. I am stuck on his line, thought I had a connection but have been informed it is incorrect. I have the census listing for Carroll Co. Tn and Marion Co. Ark and information that he died in 1881 (two dates: 15 Jan and 15 Nov don't know which is correct). Know he married a Sarah (McEwing)? and they had 12 children, she died 1856 in Marion Co. Ark and he married Rachel Elizabeth Stratton after 1860 census was taken. Any idea who his parents were?
contact me direct at my email memisdtr@cox.net
Marian Titsworth Dingman

My husbands family shares your line by way of David Hoover which connects to Smothers, John Henry.
There is a book available through the Gutenburg project on early NC history. The title includes the words SouthWest. I finally figured that it ment SW America ca 1800. Good reading.

The children of John Kohn and Sarah Smothers were: George Amos, Lydia Margret, John Langdon, James Fremont and Reuben Sylvester.
This John Kohh was not that young when he died.
!825-1895. So, he was about 70.

Sarah did remarry, a Moore, in 1897 and they had no children

John Kohn, Sarah Smothers Kohn and I think, Reuben Sylvester
are buried in Westside Cemetery in Delphos, Ohio.

If you are talking of Smothers, Kohns etc., it is Franklin County, Ohio.
The Good, Kohns, Smothers and several other families, traveled via wagon train from West VA to Franklin County, Ohio about 1835 or 1836. These families traveled together and stayed together, marrying etc.

Shar

Smothers from Ohio

I am a relative of Alexander Smothers and his wife Elizabeth Davis. We have been searching for him for several years. His daughter's name is Sarah Ann Smothers Immel, she married Herman/Harman (depending which document your looking at) who is the father of Phillip Herman Immel that married Anna Laura (or Laura Anna, again which ever document your looking at) and I am the daughter of one of their daughters. I would welcome any and all help I can get. Thank you in advance.

Ohio Smothers

If nobody else has thought about this, I might as well put it out there. If your a Smothers or a decendant of the Smothers that are in Ohio...guess what, we are probably all related. We keep running in circles trying to connect to a tree and we are all from the same tree no doubt. What we really need to do is have a Smothers Family meeting...bring all our info and share with each other all at once so there is no more running in different directions around the Smothers Tree in Ohio. Yes our GG's came thru Penn. as well so maybe we can make it easier than what we have been if we just meet this summer in the middle of Ohio. What does everyone think??? Think about it before you respond...dont get upset with me, I just want to finalize my records and get them in order like everyone else. Just consider it speak to your other relatives that you know and then respond. This would make it alot easier, coz I dont want to go bald from pulling my hair out trying to figure out which John is from what parent/which William and so on...that would look weird and my answer to anyone that asks what happened would sound weird. Please consider a Smothers meeting and then respond.

Alexander & Elizabeth (Davis) Smothers

This is what I know so far...our line connects to the Smothers this way. Alexander Smothers married Elizabeth Davis and they had a few children, Sarah Ann married Herman Immel of Galloway Ohio (they are our great grand parents) they had 7 children. After he died she married a man named Edward Strait and remained his wife until she passed away in Columbus Ohio. One of Sarah & Herman's children is Phillip Herman Immel who married Laura Anna Miller (our grandparents) and they had 12 children. We have been looking for info on Alexander and Elizabeth for many years now. I know that most of there relatives moved up as far as Toledo Ohio. I have John & Matilda as his parents as well, John was married twice if memory serves me. Never was able to locate Alexander at all. Have hit the famous brick wall on Alexander and Elizabeth. I have the Immel heritage to our gggrandpa who came from Hesse Castle Gremany. One of our cousins has some tin type photos from around the civil war days that may connect some of the Davis' to both the lines but making heads or tales out of it is a pain right now. They didnt exactly takes good notes back then, we have a bunch of scribbling that we are trying to figure out yet. Let me know if any of this rings a bell with anyone.

I hope you have info on Alexander daughter & family. I've been looking for some for a long time. Hopefully pictures.
My gt-grandfather was Alexanders brother, William H.
I've not found deaths or parents for John & Matilda. A gt-aunt told me that both of her grandmothers lived around Elrey, close to Holgate & walked into town to see them. Both died in the early 1900"s. Elizabeth Frees died in 1911, but I have never found when Matilda died, or John either.
Believe John & Christian were cousin's. I know Wm. was a 2 cousin to Christian's son Daniel.
I have inherited John & Matilda's Bible. There isn't anything wrote in it, or no place to have wrote informantion. It was given to them by some organiation.
I got it touch with people in Columbus & was told that they bought several bibles a yr. & passed them on to people that didn't have any.
I don't know if Alexander died in the Civil War, or may have came home sick & died later. Not even if he went back after he deserted Camp Chase 26 Dec 1964.I do have all the paper work for the war, last dated Dec 1964 in Tenn, his & Elizabeth's marriage license & a few census.
Daughter Sarah: I've traced her by census & have her death certificate.
I will share my stuff with anyone willing to share their line with me.
Can e-mail direct to
loiswallace@columbus.rr.com
