My line is: ElijahSmallwood/Nancy Benton>Harrison P.White/Bethany Smallwood>Susan Elizabeth White/George Stemmons>Anna Elizabeth Stemmons/Millard Fillmore Stone (my great grandparents).

Here is what I have. I am going to paste it on this message, but if it doesn't work, let me know. This is footnoted and the sources follow.
1 Elijah C. SMALLWOOD Junior1,2
--------------------------------------------------
Birth:	abt 1788, Maryland
Death:	Oct 1851, Boone County, Missouri3
Father:	Elijah SMALLWOOD (1735-1810)
Mother:	Sarah

There is an Elijah C. Smallwood, aged 61, listed in the 1850 census in Boone County, Missouri. This may be the same person. He is a farmer who was born in Maryland. There is an Elijah Smallwood who served in the 2nd Regiment (Jennings’)Kentucky Vols. as a private in the War of 1812. There is an obituary for Elijah Smallwood in 1851 which lists his age as about 57., ,
In the Federal Census of 1850, there are three children listed with Elijah Smallwood. It is not known if they are his children or grandchildren. They were Jane Smallwood, George Smallwood and Barton Smallwood. They are all found together in 1860 in Independence, Jackson County, Missouri. By that time, Jane was listed as Jane Hockensmith and her two brothers were living with her. She was 20 and had a daughter, Martha, aged one year.
In 1830, Elijah Smallwood was in Madison County, KY. IN 1840, he was in Howard County, Missouri., , , 4, 5, 3,6

Spouse:	Nancy BENTON7,2
Birth:	1795, Madison County, Kentucky7
Death:	abt 1855
Father:	Richard Warren BENTON (1770-<1830)
Mother:	Winifred HOPPER (~1770-<1810)
Marriage:	28 Jun 1814, Madison County, Kentucky2,8

Children:	Bethany/Bethana SMALLWOOD (1819-1886)
William S. WHITE9,10,11,12,18,13,15,14
Birth:	4 Aug 1814, Kentucky9,10,12,18,16
Death:	23 Mar 1889, Rocheport, Boone County, Missouri16
Father:	Unknown WHITE
Mother:	Unknown

He is listed as a Prisoner of the Union Army on 19 June 1862. In the listing, he is said to be a Citizen instead of a military person.
He served as an Assessor in Howard County. He died while visiting at the residence of his son, George White in Rocheport.
He had a Masonic funeral.
In the 1840 Census, he is living in Boone County, next door to John White who may be his brother.
DIED
WHITE--In Rocheport, Boone County, MO, Saturday, March 23, 1889 of apoplexy, H. P. White, aged 74 years.
The deceased was born in Kentucky in 1814 and when reared to manhood, he emigrated to Missouri, settling in this county near Rocheport where he resided a few years, afterwards removing to Howard County, where he lived for nearly forty years and was at one time mayor of Fayette. At the time of his death, he was a resident of Fayette. He died in Rocheport while visiting relatives.

Also,
Death of Harrison P. White
After a sudden and brief illness of paralysis, at the residence of his son, Mr. George White, in this place, on March we 1889, came the close of a long life to Mr. H. P. White. The deceased home was in Fayette with his daughter, Mrs.Laura Cook. He had determined to pay a visit to his sons in this place, Benton, George and Thomas, when accordingly on last Thursday week he started, in company with some friends from that place, in his usual Health and genial spirits, and was unusually cheerful until within a short distance of Rocheport, he became unable to move or speak. He, however, upon his arrival, attempted to alight from the conveyance, when he fell to the ground. He was assisted into the house, and growing more and more seriously ill, nothwithstanding his physician's skill, scarce obtained relief until by the coming of the summons of the Master on Saturday night following, to take a ride in Israel's Chariot. In this seems a coincidence; as on Saturday a week prior, the death-angel hovered about, had entered this home, claiming for his own a little grandson, thus setting forth the fact, that He not only "reaps the bearded grain at a breath," , but "the flowers that grow between between." Uncle Rite," as he familiarly known, was one of the few who passed away without leaving an ememy. A good father_is_gone. But, besides those very near, in the hearts and minds of the hosts of those who knew and revered, the memory of him will ever remain green with refreshing tenderness.
Mr. White was born n Kentucky in 1814, where he grew to manhood, when he emigrated to Missouri, first settling near Rocheport, in Boone County, and afterwards to Howard County, where resided for more than thirty years. for four years he was assessor of Howard County, and in 1880, he was elected Mayor of Fayette, serving one term. He had been a member of the Christian Church for 40 years. His children were eleven, seven of whom survive him. His wife preceeded him to the grave some two years.
On the following Sunday at 3 o'clock p.m., were funeral services at the Christian Church in this place, the conducing of which was by Rev. Deucher, of Fayette, in he presence of a large and sympathetic assemblage of friends--there to pay the last tribute of respect to the deceased, with services. Masonic honors, deceased having been a member of that order for 30 years or more. On entering the church with the remains the choir began with organ, the sublime and hopeful hymn, "We Shall Meet on That Beautiful Shore." which was continued as the pall was borne to the altar to the casket surmounted with the usual Masonic emblem and an elegant wreath of flowers as memorial of the affectionate thought and feeling. As the singing service ceased, Rev. Deucher kneeling, offered prayer. The scripture, citation was 2nd Cor. 5th Chapter. Opening the discourse with conciliatory thoughts to those nearest, and dearest, and about his acquaintanceship in Fayette with deceased; then addressing together with these personages, the audience, in true and tender sentiments, touching the life now past; using beautiful similes in illustration. Services were closed at the church with the restful and appropriate hymn Asleep in Jesus," when all repaired from thence to the cemetery, where the burial was Masonic.

Marriage:	9 Nov 1838, Howard County, Missouri11,20,21,13

Children:	Susan Elizabeth (1840->1880)
Benton (1844-1913)
John W.
Hi Amy,
I cannot remember if we have communicated or not. I am a descendant of Bethany Smallwood/Harrison P. White. I have found when they died and some things about them.
I would be happy to share this with you.
I believe that Elijah Smallwood is the father of Bethany and Nancy Benton is her mother.
Hi Sharon, I, too, am a Maryland Smallwood descendent and there are a lot of us out there and some with missing links. On Family Tree Maker there is a Smallwood DNA test that has been going on which shows a lot of DNA connections. It does follow the direct male line and I think you may be interested in looking at it especially if you have a living male Smallwood in your family. My cousin took the test and it links our line to Col. James Smallwood.
Jeanne Smallwood Gross

Hello! Thank you for your reply-this was an old posting. I did not have Emma's maiden name. My email is lking1107@comcast.net. I have a couple more blanks for Benjamin and Emma that would be great to fill. I grew up in Yreka-we were neighbors!

Bernard Smallwood - Rochester, NY

I am looking for any family links for a Bernard Smallwood of the Rochester, NY Smallwoods.

Bernard was born abt 1880 in Rochester. He had 2 sisters a Magdelene (who married John T. Voll) and a Rose or Rosa.

Bernard moved to Ohio married a Catherine Mayock in about 1900 or 1901. These are my mother's grandparents.

I am trying to establish his parents. According to my mother Bernard and his sisters were German and may have changed their name. I have noticed that a community near Rochester in Monroe County used to be called Smallwood, so this might be their home when Bernard was born.

I have also see a large group of Smallwood from neighboring Wyoming County, so am not sure if Bernard is somehow tied to them.

Thanks for any help.

Smallwood family relocation from MD to NJ

I am looking for more information on my ancestor Isaac Smallwood. Ancestor Findings provided me with the following information which confirms verbal Smallwood family information that Isaac Smallwood moved from Charles County, MD to Gloucester County, NJ near the end of the Revolutionary War.

Can anyone provide me with clues to more family members in MD? Most of us New Jersey Smallwood descendents are stopped at Isaac not being able to relate him to anyone in Maryland.

Isaac was reportedly born in England about 1718 which would have made him a older man when he left Maryland. He fathered at least two children: William Smallwood (no further info) and Samuel Perry Smallwood (born about 1740 in Port Deposit, Cecil County, MD passing on 14 Feb 1792 probably in New Jersey. Samuel Perry Smallwood married Mary Weldon so I am looking for Weldon information as well.

Only listing I could find in this database:
Census Index: Colonial America, 1607-1789

Smallwood, Isaac State: MD
County : Charles Co.
Year : 1778
Page # : 116
Census type code: Fidelity Oath

Smallwood, Isaac State: NJ
County : Gloucester Co.
Location : Deptford Twp
Year : 1780
Page # : 015
Census type code : Tax List
Additional source information: MAY ASSESSMENT Smallwood, Isaac State : NJ County : Gloucester Co.
Location : Deptford Twp
Year : 1780
Page # : 022
Census type code : Tax List
Additional source information: FEBRUARY ASSESSMENT Smallwood, Isaac State : NJ County : Gloucester Co.
Location : Deptford Twp
Year : 1781
Page # : 008
Census type code : Tax List
Additional source information: JULY ASSESSMENT Smallwood, Isaac State : NJ County : Gloucester Co.
Location : Deptford Twp
Year : 1782
Page # : 014
Census type code : Tax List
Additional source information: APRIL ASSESSMENT Smallwood, Isaac State : NJ County : Gloucester Co.
Location : Deptford Twp
Year : 1782
Page # : 017
Census type code : Tax List
Additional source information: AUGUST ASSESSMENT Smallwood, Isaac State : NJ County : Gloucester Co.
Location : Greenwich Twp
Year : 1784
Page # : 012
Census type code : Tax List

Smallwood, Isaac State : NJ
County : Gloucester Co.
Location : Greenwich Twp
Year : 1785
Page # : 013
Census type code : Tax List
Additional source information : JULY ASSESSMENT Smallwood, Isaac State : NJ County : Gloucester Co.
Location : Greenwich Twp
Year : 1786
Page # : 015
Census type code : Tax List
Additional source information : JULY ASSESSMENT

I believe that Joseph may have married Florence Battle in Birmingham in 1903. I'd like very much to trace the family of Joseph. I am related through his mother's side of the family that name is Ballard.

Pheobe.

Thanks for your reply.

My Great Grandmother is Abigail Smallwood born in New Jersey. The only Abigail Smallwood I can find in the census is the daughter of Abel and Naomi Smallwood in Egg Harbor Township. Abel’s age in 1850 is consistent with that of Abel Smallwood in Gloucester County in 1840. The only other Abel Smallwood I can find in the census is the son of this Abel Smallwood. Abel does not have a son John living with him in 1850 but John may be in his twenties in 1850.

Curt

One last article gives the relationship of the smallwoods so I thought I would paste it also.

Mt Vernon Signal 9 March 1900
The murder of young Millard Hughes, near East Bernstadt, was the gravest crime ever committed in the county. Lynching may result. The persons under arrest charged with the crime are Ed Smallwood, his son Leonard, daughters Lizzie and Ida, Mary Cassaday and Hampton Gragg. All refuse to talk. The evidence at the coroner's inquest showed that Lizzie Smallwood used a double barrel shot gun in the killing. She also tried to shoot Deputy Collier when the arrest was made and gave the officers a sharp tussle when putting handcuffs on her. The prisoners were brought here under strong guard to prevent lynching

Hickman KY - England

There was an article in the Hickman KY newspaper that gives a link to a couple smallwoods to family in Birmingham England

9 Aug 1901 The Hickman Courier

Owensburg KY Aug 3 - James H Smallwood and William B Lewis, two streetcar motormen have fortune knocking at their doors after having been poor all their life. About a year ago an ancestor of theirs, whose name was Sizelich Smallwood, died in Birmingham England, leaving an estate worth 15,000,000. Six months ago Smallwood employed an attorney in Birmingham to look after his interest, and after furnishing proofs of descent the lawyer offered to give him 100,000 for his interest in the estate, which he refused to take. Smallwood and Lewis continue to work as street car motormen, but will push their claims to the English millionaires's estate. Both men are about 35 years of age and have families

found later article on same subject dated 13 July 1909

Governor Willson refused to grant a pardon to Leonard Smallwood, sentenced to the pentitentary for life for the killing of Millard Hughes in Laurel County, stating one pardon for killing a man was enough, Smallwood having been set free by Gov. Bradley for the killing of a brother 3 months before the second crime was committed.

Smallwood Stanford KY

I ran across an article from Stanford KY March 6 1900

Killed in Laurel - At a Saturday's night dance at Ed Smallwood's notoriously bad house near East Bernstadt, Leonard Smallwood got mad at Wm Hughes of Madison County and without a word shot him to death. Robert McKinley, a citizen, arrested Smallwood and notified the authorities. The inquest implicated besides Leonard, Ed, Lizzie and Ida smallwood, Mary Cassidy and Hampton Gregg. All were taken to the London Jail. Smallwood killed his own brother at the same place two years ago and had just gotten out of the penitentery. Hughes makes the third man killed at that place in three years.

His father was James (Jimmy) Esker (d.1991) who was married to Lorene Deal. Jimmy's father was James Lodrick (1878?-1944?) whose father was Martin. I've done some research on the family and would LOVE to talk to you if you have ties to these people.
Thanks,
Tracie Smallwood
