Hoping to make contact with anyone with knowledge or link to Barbadian Smalls.
My partner's father was Maurice Woodsley Small, born in the early 1930's in St Michael's, Barbados. He joined the Merchant Navy and settled in Liverpool in the 1950's.
Maurice was son of Brandford, who was also a Merchant Seaman, working between Barbados and the USA. As far as we know, he lived in Barbados all his life. I know Brandford is another fairly common Barbadian surname so I cant be certain whether Brandford was his forename or surname, given the fact that it was common for parents not to marry in Barbados (probably a legacy of the fact that owners rarely allowed their slaves to marry, thus eliminating the "marriage culture" that would otherwise have survived from the Victorian values of the age).
We know that Maurice had a sister, who ran a rum shack on the beach.
Anyone with any info on the family, please get in touch... but also anyone who knows anything about the history of the Smalls in Barbados... where was the plantation, who owned it etc... we are visiting Barbados in February, and would love to have some background info before we leave.
Many thanks
