Unable to trace marriage to Smailes
According to Dr.Barnardo's records for my father HAROLD HEAP, his maternal aunt EVELINE HEAP was given custody of him around 1926 after his mother LILIAN VICTORIA HEAP died. The records are old and it shows that EVELINE had a son Geoffrey Smailes, although the paperwork is blotched over the spelling of SMAILES, so I am unsure of the spelling. All I know for sure is that Geoffrey was born at some point before my dad went into Dr Barnardo's. My dad was born in 1923 and the records show that he was just under 11 went he was placed in care. CAN ANYONE SHED ANY LIGHT ON ANY OF THIS. I HAVE HIT A BRICK WALL.

Re: Unable to trace marriage to Smailes
Hi Cathy Although I am not researching the Heap family (Harold Heap was the husband of my 3rd cousin and so not a blood relative) I took a quick look at various records. I found an Eveline HEAP who married a Norman SMALES in April/May/June 1931 in Keighly, W Yorks. They appear to have had a son Geoffrey SMALES born in Oct/Nov/Dec 1931. also in Keighley, W Yorks. (Mother's maiden name was HEAP)
Hope this helps Bw Lynda

Re: Unable to trace marriage to Smailes
Hi, I would just like to say thank you very much indeed for taking the time to answer my query. Just out of interest is the Harold Heap you were looking into married to my Mum (Elizabeth Ann Heap).

Re: Unable to trace marriage to Smailes
Well hello 4th cousin, I am glad to hear we have a connection but was suprised to find it's through Mum. Although my immediate family are very close, I knew very little about Mum's family, I knew my Aunt and Uncles and when very young we had contact with their children, but families move around and we had no real contact, although I am meeting up with my cousin Maureen next month. I knew my Grandad (Reginald) but my Mums' Mum passed away when my Mum was only 13. Dad grew up in Dr Barnardo's so no family on that side. So are you an Assender/Assinder or a Leyshon, part of me hopes it's on the Leyshon side as I am really struggling with that line. Anyway I would be pleased to hear from you no matter which line of the family. Thanks for messaging, I look forward to hearing from you when you get time. Regards Cathy
