COSHOCTON, OHIO: James Garfield Smailes, Jr., 92, died Monday morning, January 24th, 2011 at Coshocton County Memorial Hospital.

He was born October 20, 1918 in Coshocton, Ohio, to the late Dr. James G. Smailes, Sr., and Martha (Ferguson) Smailes.

He attended Coshocton High School and graduated from Castle Heights Military Academy in 1936 and from Muskingum College in 1941 where he was a member of the Mace fraternity.

As a youth, Mr. Smailes achieved the rank of Eagle Scout - Silver Palm.
He operated the Desoto-Plymouth agency and the Chrysler-Plymouth agency, Jim Smailes Motor Sales, for 36 years in Coshocton.
He was a World War II Army veteran and a member of Grace United Methodist Church. Additionally, he served as President of Kiwanis Club, President of the Shrine Club and was a 70-year member of the Masonic Lodge. Formerly, he was a 32nd Degree Mason of the Valley of Cambridge Scottish Rites. He also served on the Board of Directors for Home Loan Savings Bank.

He spent his life restoring over 20 antique cars and belonged to the Horseless Car Club of America, the Antique Car Club of America and the Veteran Motor Car Club. Over the years he shipped a 1911 E.M.F. Touring Car to South Africa and a 1912 Flanders automobile to Holland, both of which he had restored.
He was a frequent announcer for the antique car parade during Canal Days Festivals and an avid Harley Davidson motorcycle and NASCAR enthusiast.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Margaret (Lorenz) Smailes whom he married June 15th, 1947; also surviving are a son, James G. Smailes III (Janne) of Athens, Ohio, and a daughter, Suzanne S. Clark (Brian) of Coshocton; and two grandchildren, Megan Given of Columbus, Ohio and Matthew Given of Coshocton.

In addition to his parents; he was preceded in death by a brother, John; and two sisters, Grace and Edith.

A memorial service will be held in the Sanctuary at Grace United Methodist Church, 422 Main Street, Coshocton, Ohio, on Friday, January 28, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. with The Reverend Craig Redecker officiating.
The family will greet friends in the Parlor of the church for one hour prior to the service.
A private family burial will occur in South Lawn Cemetery, Given-Dawson Funeral Home is serving the family, and will have an online memorial for Mr. Smailes at www.given-dawsonfuneralhome.com.
