I have been researching the Smailes Name for several years and I can give you quite a lot about the Smailes Family from the Tanfield area. Joseph W Smailes was eldest son of Nicholas Smailes b cir 1845 in Lanchester in Durham and Elizabeth b cir 1848 in Statley in Durham. Both are recorded in the 1881,1891 & 1901 Census I can trace the family back to Nicholas Smailes b 1738 at Long Newton. I would be interested in the more modern thread of your family. regards Michael Smailes
