Smailes - Manning River, New South Wales, Australia
My grandmother Rosemount Smailes married John Thomas in 1911. Rosemount's parents where James and Elizabeth Ann Ryan. My understanding is that James' fathers name was James and his mother's name was Margaret. I do not have any information on James Jnr's siblings. Is anyone else researching this family, if so I would love to hear from you with a view of sharing information.

Re: Smailes - Manning River, New South Wales, Australia
Thomas and my great grandfather, James, were brothers. James was the youngest child of Robert Smails and Margaret Williamson. He was born 3 May 1846 in Surry Hills, Sydney NSW.
Do you know when Robert and Margaret arrived in Tasmania? I am in contact with a grandson of Sarah Smails, Georgina's sister, and he has not been able to establish how they arrived and neither have I.
I would be willing to share information if you are interested. Look forward to hearing from you.

Re: Smailes - Manning River, New South Wales, Australia
Thank you so much for the response. Since your query was posted in 2005 I thought chances were only 50/50 that I would get a response.
The only Info I have on Robert Smailes and Margaret Williamson is that they are Thomas's parents and that they were married August 21, 1832 in Hobart Town. Source is their marriage certificate. Do you have any info on Robert or Margaret's deaths? Did Thomas and James have any other siblings?
How are you connnected to the Smailes? Thanks Jean Brewer
James is a new piece of info for me.

Re: Smailes - Manning River, New South Wales, Australia
Margaret Jemima WILLIAMSON was buried in Sydney on 27 April 1847 and Robert married another Margaret soon after.
Robert was drowned ? suicide in Rose Bay on 7 Nov 1867 (this might be his burial date).
He seems to have been bankrupt in lots of places and to have ended up an alcoholic (his second wife probably didn't see him much towards the end). I've never found a birth date for either or where they came from. I had thought both were Scottish but have just found a possible Northumberland birth in 1808? Is this possible? Very close to Scottish border.
