Help Wanted on Peter Smail Info

I have found that I am most likely from the Peter Smail (Schmel) line. I do however have a few questions. Does anyone know why the name was changed from Schmel (German) to Smail (UK)? My great grandfather (Edward Charles Smail) had always said that his family had come from the UK. So Peter Smail was definitely from Germany? I have never really found any concrete information on the country of origin for the 'Smail' name; I had always assumed it was Scottish.

Any info would be greatly appreciated

thanks!

Ok my great grandpa was Charles William Smail son of Daivd Cyrus Smail and Annie Elizabeth Ashbaugh brother to Walter Smail. My great grandpa Charles died in a train wreck when my grandfather was only 3 yrs old. So we are from the same Smail line. I have Peter Smail born in Rhineland, Germany approximately 1735.

My grandfather, James Ross Orr, came to Wisconsin shortly after the Civil War 1867 1868, with his family from Pennsylvania. His father purchased timberland which was burned the same year as the Chicago fire. He was sheriff of Oconto County for awhile. Married and had three children, Hunter, Frances, and Grace .I am looking for names of his parents, brothers and sisters and the town or county they were from in PA, the name of the the women he married. He moved to Flint, MI in 1907 or so. Hope this get's to jdoravec.

My Dad always said Smail came from Ishmail that they were jews, dad always used the family traits of the "nose" and The "bald heid". Dad was born in Galasheils But all the Smails back into the 1600" were in and around Ancrum, Cavers, Denholm and I believe were blacksmiths.
I have found a Peter way back during my searches.
My Email is mucklesumphe@hotmail.com

I know its been awhile since you posted info on Peter Smail , Im wondering if my Walter Smail is the same as yours. Mine is Walter Silas Smail, born 4 Jul 1868 in Latrobe PA and died in 1954 in Lewistown, MT. His ggg grandfather would ahve been Peter Smail from Germany.

Hi Mindy,
I'm your cousin Mark Smith. I'm your Uncle Dwane Smith's son. I took Dad's name from his high school years as my user name...."CANONBALL".

I saw your inquiry about Peter Smail, Great Gandfather Walter Smail's great great great grandfather. I don't have any information but I would like to help. If I find out anything I will let you know.

I hope all is well with your family. I will get your address from Dad and write you all a letter.

Peace,

Mark Smith
