The Forest Republican Wednesday July 17, 1901 Our old friend W. R. Smail was down from Fagundas last Saturday. Walt likes to come to town about once in six months to have what he calls "a little fun with the boys." He took his mother-in-law, Mrs. Geo. Salsgiver home with him.
The Forest Republican Wednesday August 26, 1903 Mrs. Bert Gorton and children, of Tidioute, were guests of her uncle, Daniel Salsgiver, last Friday.
The Forest Republican May 1, 1907 Recent Deaths - Mrs. W. R. Smail. Died, suddenly at her home in Hickory township, April 25th, 1907, Catharine Malinda Smail (nee Salsgiver) wife of Walter R. Smail, aged 58 years, 6 months and 21 days. The deceased leaves to mourn her death a husband and seven children living; three children having preceded her to the spirit land while yet in their infancy. Sister Smail was a charter member of the Eli Berlin W. R. C., No. 32, of East Hickory. She is the second member of our Corps to answer the summons since our organization eleven months ago. The Corps attended the funeral in a body on Sunday afternoon. The beautiful service of the W. R. C. was rendered at the house. Our Post was also present in a body and acted as pall bearers. The service at the M. E. church was conducted by the pastor, Rev. Coffman, and was truly sympathetic and instuctive. The selection rendered by the choir was finely executed. The thanks of the sorely bereaved family are extended to all who so kindly assisted them in their sad bereavement. (In Memoriam follows)

Titusville Herald Wednesday July 27, 1927 SHERIFF THINKS HE HAS CLUE TO $600 THEFT – Burglars Make Rich Haul at Home Along River Opposite Trunkeyville. – Sheriff G. C. Mong of Forest county believes he has a clue which will lead to the identity of the person or persons who early Monday morning entered the home of Walter Smail, aged 86 years, who resides along the Allegheny river, opposite Trunkeyville, and made away with a roll of bills totaling $600. The nature of the clue is not made known. According to the story given by those in the house, the thief smashed a window with a club. He crawled over the body of the aged man and removed the trousers, which held the money, from beneath the pillow and left in the same manner he entered. Mr. Smail was sleeping on a cot just inside the broken window. The thief took the $600 which was in $10 and $20 bills and left the trousers just outside the window. An aged couple named McKay were in the house at the time, but they as well as the aged man, who is a pensioner of the Civil war, were so badly frightened and unnerved that they were unable to give any identification of the intruder. There is a slight wound above Mr. Smail’s left eye, which is indicative of some violence, although it is believed that the only motive was robbery.
(The couple mentioned as McKay in the above article were probably William T. Mckay and his wife, Lenora Annette "Nettie" Salsgiver McKay, the sister of Walter Smail's wife, Catherine.)
Warren Morning Mirror Warren, Pennsylvania Monday morning September 5, 1927 Surviving Veteran Dies. In the death of Walter R. Smail of Trunkeyville Saturday afternoon at 4:45 p.m. the last member of the Eli Berlin Post G.A.R. was called to the Great Unknown. Mr. Smail and Lemuel Wolf, who was killed a short time previous to Mr. Smail’s death being all who were left of the once flourishing post. Walter R. Smail was born at Tylersburg, Pa ., Nov. 9, 1892 (sic). He served in the Civil War as a member of Co. A., 103rd Pennsylvania Volunteers taking active part in many battles. From the time of the death of his wife, 1907 he lived alone at Trunkeyville, until this summer, when after being robbed of a considerable sum by burglars who entered his home, he moved to East Hickory, and made his home with Mr. and Mrs. S. S. Barnett. Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon from the Barnett home with interment in the East Hickory cemetery.
(note - his year of birth should have been listed as 1842, not 1892 - an obvious error since the article mentions his civil war service.)
Warren Morning Mirror Thursday September 8, 1927 Mrs. Maude Gordon, Pennsylvania avenue, left Wednesday for Trackville (Trunkeyville?) where she has been called by the sudden death of her father.
