Hello.....I noticed my cousin don responded to a post years ago and I came through this by....chance? My father was Doanald Houser whose mother was Anna Smaha. Don of DonColleen is my cousin, his father was Al Houser, the oldest child of Anna Smaha Houser. The same summer I got married, Smaha relatives found my parents in Alma Center, WI and I have always been curious how that came about. Ideas? Merida Houser

Merida: Nice to hear from a cousin on this message board. I have been playing with genealogy a bit so could use some help from you on filling in some blanks on your side of the family. My main source on the Houser side is LuJean, she seems to keep up to date with everyone, who has kept me reasonably up to date, but I do need some dates filled in. I think I have a good phone number for you so will give you a call.

Heh, Don....I didn't think this was you.

You know LuJean is definitely the source on all these things, I have been peeking at Smahas, as I just don't remember much with the ones that found found Mom and Dad....I was gone by then, the rest of the kids didn't pay any attention!

How are you all? Has been forever....will try to get a real update note out to you, maybe around the holidays? Merida

Hi...I'm a cousin and visited Alma Center many years ago with my Mother Betty Smaha. As I recall, we stayed with Grace. My grandfather was William Smaha, brother to Anna, JOseph and Frank. My sister Carolyn and I have been searching for years to find our Bohemian roots/parents of Joseph Smaha, Sr. and Fannie Zatechka.

Any clues on your side?

Hello! I put this up quite some time ago. What a great surprise. Thank you.

Grace (Houser) Smith was my aunt. Don (my dad) was her little brother.

You were out to our farm (which was also Frank and Anna's farm) the summer of 1977 (I think) as I had just gotten married so was in Canada at the time...honeymoon. :)

The Smaha connection puzzles all of us. I have another cousin and a cousin by marraige both interested in this as well. Yes, it is a brick wall with the Smahas and the generation that might have a clue has few members with us now. I have found little info even here at ancestry. Aside from Joe and Fannie's names, I have little, thus my inquiry.

My Dad never talked about having any aunts, uncles or cousins on either side of his parents' families, Housers OR Smahas so that visit of yours was all new info to us and is fondly remembered. We knew our great aunts/uncles/second cousins from mom's side but not a word was ever uttered by anany of Dad's siblings about family, it was all VERY
MYSTERIOUS. Are there still Smahas in Iowa? You have a sister named Carolyn and your name...??? I have found that there are variations on the spelling of Smaha, it seems coming through immigration caused a great deal of this difficulty as names were often randomly shortened or spelled in new ways at the point of immigration. Glad to hear from you, I can send email address if you are ever interested. Merida

Merida, would love to hear more from you. Yes there are still Smahas in Iowa. My sister Carolyn and her family. My brother Bill is now retired and living in AZ & MN. My sister and I have connected with a distant cousin in Prague but have yet to really get past Joseph and Fannie.

Please send your email and we can exchange more information.

Hello, Cathy. So, Cathy and Carolyn and Bill. :)

As I said, we have only a few people looking and really only one cousin who might remember any of the visit with Betty and family that summer. My cousin LuJean is Grace's daughter and is the elder of our little band at present. She is our glue, once she has left us, the Housers will lose track of each other in my generation (55+).

Iowa is NOT THAT FAR AWAY, Larry and I could make that a trip sometime, maybe get to say hello to our long losts. :) He has been hunting for a job, he managed at a truck stop complex that was bought and bulldozed. His unemployment is giving us a little time to do what we generally could not.

I am pcmismine@gmail.com. I know it is long, our kids created it long ago (pcm stands for power car mama as I have an old Firebird that was pretty hot stuff when I first bought it nearly 20 years ago. is mine (get it?). If I had known how integral email would become in our world, it would have been a much shorter handle. Later, Merida
