There is in the Library of Congress a book written by Edward H Jayne that I have a copy. It clearly links us as related. Your Great-Great Grandfather had a brother named Christian. Your Great-Great Grandfather had 6 Sons and a Daughter. Samuel born in 1819 the youngest. There was George-1809,Elijah-1811,Edgar-1812,Sarah-1813, William-1815, (my great grandfather), John-1817.
Christian Smack, Stephen's brother, had family that are buried in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery at Terrytown, New York.
This book was written in 1926.Its Title ANCESTRY OF THE JAYNE FAMILY OF LONG ISLAND.It appears the original Smack came from Holland somewhere between 1750 and 1780.I believe his name was John. It seems Elijah was the authors grandfather, with all kinds of reference to his civil war record.
It all coincides with notes left by my father who did not know of this book.
My father wrote that Stephen , born 12-24-1782 married Martha Knapp Sept. 3,1807.died May 8,1858.The Smack farm was sold to a man named Niblo and became Niblo's Gardens, ( a beer garden & music hall on the outskirts of the city) subsequently became part of Brooklyn. My father's notes state that the original Smack had at least two sons, Christian and Stephen.

Thank you for your reply. I do have information on the descendents of Stephen Smack and Martha Knapp. I've had a harder time with Stephen's ancesters. When I first started my research, I saw a copy of the Jayne family history in the New York City public library. The notes that I have indicate that, according to this book, the Smacks were descended from four Smacks, Christian, Stephen, Edgar and Elijah. I can't determine the relationship between these four. I found a Christian Smack who was born in 1760. Since our Stephen was born in 1782, it seems unlikely that they were brothers. This Christian had Children, but none of them are Stephen, Elijah or Edgar. His children are Christian, b. 1784; Mary, Eliza, Rachel, Catherine and Harriet.
The only mention of Elijah and Edgar I have are the children of Stephen and Martha. I haven't been able to find anything about a John, other then another son of Stephen. I've been going through passenger lists coming into New York during the 1700's and haven't come upon anything yet. The information about the farm being sold for a beer garden and music hall was most interesting. Hopefully, someone can help us with aditional information.

Your message on Stephen is mutually interesting. My father left me the information regarding his children, with birthdates and such. Your information on Christian Smack is all new to me.Danial Smack of Fruitport, Michigan has a son who he told me was going to the Netherlands to research our family. I have not heard back from him in the last couple years.

Please tell me more about how you learned of my ancesters in Brooklyn, and that they came here from Holland in the 1600's. I have a book by Edward H. Jayne written in 1926 that has a lot of my family history, but nothing about Stephen's father/mother.

Dear Diane,
Are you still doing family history. Now that I am retired I am back on the search. I have quite a bit of information so far.
