Is anyone on this message board a descendant of Walter S. Smack of Philadelphia? He was born about 1869 and died after 1940, he seems to have been a resident of Philadelphia for all of his life. He was a son of James Edward & Rebecca (?) Smack. James Edward Smack was born about 1841 in Virginia, son of John H. & Catherine (?) Smack.

I am particularly interested in Walter's grandmother, Catherine. She was born NY about 1817 and died Richmond, VA Aug 21, 1854. I found a bit of scarce newspaper evidence that she may have been a Catherine Donley the daughter of John S. & Elizabeth (Polin) Donley. Both John S. Donley and Elizabeth Polin were born and married in Gravesend, Brooklyn, NY and removed to Richmond, VA in the early 1820s. Elizabeth died Sep. 1832 in VA, John S. Donley soon married again and raised a second family.

John S. Donley was the son of Stephen and Nellie (Hubbard) Donley. Stephen Donley was in the Pennsylvania Regiment of Artillery of the Continental line during the Revolutionary War, he settled in Gravesend, Brooklyn NY and died there Jan 30, 1833.

I had thought that the line of Stephen Donley's descendants in Virginia had died off until I discovered this possible granddaughter, Catherine (Donley) Smack.

I would be interested to see if any of Walter S. Smack's descendants know of his grandmother, Catherine, and have evidence of her identity.

My sources, given upon request.
