A Smack in Ireland

Surnames: Smark, Smack, Smrk

Hi everyone,

FYI I have come across a James Smack in the Griffiths Valuation of County Clare 1855.

My opinion is that this is actually James Smark and it appears that he is residing with a Mary Smarks (Smark). I am unsure of the relationship as my Great Great Grandfather has a brother called James and a sister called Mary.....

I was wondering if anyone else on the board has any lineage that goes back to Ireland?

I have read a previous thread that said that there are many variations of the surname Smack i.e. Smock,Smeek etc... I do know that there are lot of people from Eastern Europe who emigrated to the US and as part of the US poilicy surnames had to have vowels - apparently this is one reason for Smarks in the US (Smrk).

Would be great to hear from anyone with any information :o)

Kind Regards,

Andrew.

I also have an Ancestor from Co Clare in Ireland.
His name was Robert Smark and he married a Catherine o'Callaghan in Scariff Clare on 23/2/1857.
I have more information on his descendants who settled in Melbourne Australia. Could there be a connection to your ancestor.
Cheers

Sorry to bother you again Andrew, but I noticed two names that you mention on my tree. I have a Mary Smark born 14/4/1858 and her brother James Smark born 7/5/1866. There are also 9 more siblings, here they are in order.
Margaret b 25/11/1861, Michael my Great Grandfather b 1863
John- No details, Catherine b 27/11/1867, Johanna b 21/8/1869
Honor b 25/8/1872, Patrick b 28/7/1874, Robert b 28/7/1874 & Martin b 18/10/1876. They had big families in those days, these were all the children of Robert Smark and Kate O'Callaghan. I am trying to find more on them at the moment.
Scariff where they married is a town in Co Clare. Its either co-incidence or possible a family connection.
Cheers Again
Ian Kearns

Hi Ian,

I am guessing that we will definately be related. The information that I have is that Mary Smark and James Smark are indeed siblings, though Mary is the Mother of Robert Smark who married Kate Callaghan...

Happy to share more information..... you can contact me at andysmark@hotmail.com

Kind Regards,

Andrew.
