hi:
my name is veronica. when i was little, i thought i had a very strange last name. my mother told me that if i ever met anyone else with the ast name "Smack" that they were part of my family - because there is only one family of smacks. now at the tender age of 48 (smile). i have found that may not be true. i am of the african-american persuasion and i have just recently contacted a smack of the caucasion persuasion (not that i wouldn't be proud to have him in my family-but our lines didn't seem to meet anywhere). i have found my mother and her siblings to be very secretive thus, here I am (especially since they are all dead - except one). this is what i know.... my grandfather was named Albert (or lambert) smack. he came from someplace in Maryland. he married and had about five children (named Gil, Margie, Len - and i don't know the other two). somewhere along the line, he (albert smack) married again to my grandmother (mary magdelaine bolden) from virginia. they had five children (wilbur, my mother - elizabeth, hilton, hazel and lucille). he died (i was told) and left my grandmother with all ten children. that's all i know... except that he looked like an american indian (supposedly, i am the spitting image of him). my mother never married, so that is how i came to retain the family name as my maiden name. if anyone can help me trace my family backwards please help. we have a lot of "smack" cousins in New Jersey, but they don't know anymore than what i have told you. apparently my grandmother moved to Atlantic Highlands N.J. i don't know if this was with my grandfather, or after he died. by the way... deep down inside, i still believe all SMACKS are one family (smile). THANK YOU

Hi Pat:
thank you for responding. i am not quite sure if your Albert Smack is my Albert Smack (i don't think he was that old), but it sure is more than a coincidence that we both have that name in our families. I never met my grandfather (or grandmother), they both died before i was born. i do wish i could trace my family back to Maryland (i know that's where he was from - but that's all i know). what do you think?? i do know this however, i never heard it mentioned that he was an M.D. what did you mean by "taking the indian trial'? i too would like to correspond with you... how do we manage that? hehe... i guess you are saying to yourself... "boy, those NY cousins sure ask a lot of questions" (smile). it's very frustrating not being able to trace my family any further than my mother (know what i mean). well, awaiting your response.
Veronica

I just started searching the internet for a SMACK family tree. I am caucasion. I thought your letter was interesting since I remember my father William Smack(deceased) once mentioning that he had started a family tree and was saddened by the fact that some of his ancesters had once owned slaves. This information discouraged him from further searching. I agree with you that Afro American Smacks and Caucasian Smacks are probably related. Our history may go back to the 1600s. Those Smacks were from Holland and became farmers in Brooklyn. It is very possble that they had slaves in the North to help with the farm work. We suspect that they were Loyalists to the King of England and at some point moved to NJ and then to Bucks County PA. After that we suspect that they fled to Canada during the American Revolution and then returned later to New York City.

Hi Nancy:

Thanks for responding :-). I had an Aunt, whose name was Helena Smack. She did a search on our family name some 50+ years ago and got a run douwn on the name via a letter. I read the letter when I was about 15 years old. From what I can remember... it said the same thing you said basically, that our name was a dutch name, that it was not always "Smack"... the real name seemed to get lost in the "American" translation. The letter listed all the names i.e. something like first it was smeeck, or smaack, then smoek, then smock, then smack. There were a few other pronunciations and different spellings, but I can't remember all of them. I do remember however, the letter said that it was "Smock" just before it became "Smack". The letter didn't say anything about the different geographicals the family took - it really only dealt with the name itself. How far do you plan to go in your search? I have always wanted to find out about my ancestors. I've pretty much felt like a family-less child (smile) since my own family of elders were very secretive and did not promote closeness. Do you know if there is any Native American in your line (especially cherokee)? Also, just wanted to let you know, there is a caucasian "Smack" who lives in Madison CT. I will ask my sister if she remembers his name... at the time, she was living in Madison and she called him on the phone. She said he was very nice, and they talked for a good while, but both came away with the feeling that we weren't related and if we were, didn't know how (except for the name of course). Well, if you come up with anything please let me know, and I will do the same. You can e-mail me anytime. My addy is VEJA87@webtv.net.

The caucasian Smack in Madison CT is my brother, William Smack. His son, age 17, is Stephen Smack named after one our ancestors who was born 199 years before our Stephen. I am glad you said my brother was nice on the phone. He is really very nice, but not very interested in family history even though he and his son are the only ones who will carry the name in our family. I plan to coordinate my search with that of my sister's husband. So far I am just searching around on the net

Your response was really appreciated. Yes, that's his name - smile... you have jogged my memory - smile. I found his name on a web search (with his name and #), I then called my sister (who was living in Madison at the time) and that's how she came to call him. You know, as I was reading your message, I realized that I introduced the matter of "caucasian" and "afro-american", and also realized that I do not wish to continue along those lines. Although I know it is sometimes necessary when dealing with geneology (and I felt it necessary at the time of my original post to use that distinction)... I am the type of person who really believes we are all one race. I have so much mixture (German - my father; and cherokee as well as afro-american), that I can hardly distinguish myself - LOL! So please forgive me. I would appreciate it if you would love to hear any further info you gather, and i will do the same with you (if you don't mind). Also, tell your brother we said "hello" and thank him for being so nice (because... that - he was!!!).

Agree about race

I am also a mixture of many many nationalities and American Indian. My great great grandmother on my mother's side was a Lenni Lenapi from the Jersey shore. I also have Algonquin Indian blood from way back as my mother has told me. I would find it interesting if my family tree intertwined with those of Afro Americans. I will let you know what I find.
