"Rowena Rieck Slacum
Mrs. Slacum, 81, died Sunday, October 2, 2005 at her home in Charlotte [, Mecklenburg County, NC], surrounded by family and friends. Rowena was born on February 16, 1924 in Preston, Maryland, the daughter of Harry and Eleanor Whitmer Rieck. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Robert William Slacum.
Rowena was known for her wit and sense of humor, even in hard times. She was a loving and caring wife, mother, and friend. She loved her church and was a Stephen Minister and a Chaplain for St. Monica's Circle. She was very active in the LWML and especially enjoyed Ascension's quilting group. Rowena also loved writing poetry.
A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 9, 2005 at the Ascension Lutheran Church. The burial service at Sharon Memorial Park will be held on Sunday at 4:00 p.m. The family will greet friends at the church one half hour prior to the service. Viewing is offered at McEwen Funeral Chapel, 727 East Morehead Street, on Saturday, October 8th and Sunday, October, 9th.
Rowena is survived by her three children, Brenda Slacum Gordon and her husband Gary Michael Gordon of Charlotte, Barbara Slacum Williams and her husband Richard F. Williams of Charlotte, and Robert W. Slacum, Jr. of Los Angeles, California; two granddaughters, Ginger Anne Gordon and Rhonda Gail Gordon of Charlotte; siblings, Eleanor Kardash and husband Mike, Harry Rieck and wife Iris, Victor Rieck and wife Vera, John Rieck and wife Adrienne, Esther Smith and husband Jack, and Stanley Rieck and wife Maryann; sisters-in-law; Joan Rieck, Jean Rieck, and Katherine Fisher and husband John Carroll Fisher. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by brothers August and Carl Rieck.
The family requests that memorials be made to ascension Lutheran Church, 1225 East Morehead Street, Charlotte, NC 28202.
McEwen Funeral Service, Charlotte Chapel, is assisting the Slacum family."
