Hi Teejay,

Hope you find this inteligible and that it is of some help. Let me know if I can help further, but I am rather rusty these days I'm afraid.

Randal Slacke was my Gt. Grandfather's (Charles Owen Slacke) younger step-brother by his father's second wife, 'Fanny' Rose Connellan. I've not been in touch with my 'cousin' Penny for a while and all my files are currently in storage, but she has cousins, mostly born in the 1960's.

HUNTING FATALITY

PARNDON RIDER THROWN AT STILE.

Mr. Randall Beresford Slacke Killed.

Yesterday Mr. C.E. Lewis held an inquest at Little Canons, Great Parndon, on Mr. Randall Beresford Slacke, 45, an engineer, of Passmores, Great Parndon, who met with a fatal accident in the presence of his wife while out with the Essex hunt on Tuesday.
Rousleyn Geoffrey Gordon Canning, Millhurst, Harlow iddentified deceased. On Tuesday witness was hunting with the Essex Foxhounds, the meet being at the Cock, Great Parndon, about 11am. They went off to Parndon Woods between 11.30 and 12. Witness, deceased, and other members of the hunt came to a fence with a stile in it about four feet high. Mr. Swire, Jun., went over the stile. Witness then saw deceased put his horse at it. The horse did not refuse, but did not rise enough. It caught its forelegs on the second rail and turned a complete somersault on to the far side falling on deceased. When witness got to him deceased was unconcious. He was taken to a house near (Mr. S.L. Bensusan's) and medically attended. Witness had seen deceased on this horse several times before, and he appeared to be a good fencer. Deceased had been hunting regularly all the season, and apparently was in good health that day.
George Tonge, the Kennels, Harlow, first whip to the Essex Foxhounds said about 11.30 he was mounted on the outskirts of a wood near Little Canons Farm, when a number of members of the Hunt rode up, including Mr. Slacke. Mr. Jack Swire was first over the stile and Mr. Slacke then put his horse on it. The horse rose very little, striking the top bar and second bar with its knees. Deceased shot over the horse's head, and the horse turned a complete somersault on top of him. Witness saw deceased was injured, and dismounted and went to his assistance. Medical aid was summoned and he was removed to Little Canons Farm.
Dr. F.N. Day, surgeon, Harlow, said he was summoned on Tuesday and found deceased unconcious. He had very extensive injuries to the head including a large depressed fracture on top of the skull and fracture at the base of the skull. His condition was hopeless from the first, and he never recovered conciousness. He died about 1.40pm from fracture of the skull and injury to the brain.
The Coroner entered a verdict of accidental death, and expressed condolence with the relatives of the deceased in their loss.
The deceased, Mr. R.B. Slacke was the son of the late Sir Owen Slacke, who formerly reside at Barrington Hall, Hatfield Broad Oak.

KILLED IN THE HUNTING FIELD

SAD FATALITY NEAR GREAT PARNDON.

Yesterday Mr. Coroner Lewis held and inquest at Great Parndon on Mr. Randal Beresford Slacke, aged 45, of Passmores, Great Parndon, who was killed while out hunting with the Essex Hounds near Little Canons, Great Parndon, on Tuesday. The deceased, who was a son of the late Sir Howard Slacke, Barrington Hall, Hatfield Broad Oak, was manager of the journal "Engineer." Mrs Slacke was also out with the hounds, but did not witness the accident.
Mr. Gordon Canning, Millhurst, Harlow, identified the body and described the accident. He said the field came to a fence with a rail on top at Great Parndon Wood. Mr. Swire, Jnr., was the first to take the fence, and did so successfully. Others followed, and then deceased put his horse to the jump. The horse's feet caught the rail, causing the animal to turn a complete somersault, and came down with Mr. Slacke underneath. He was picked up unconcious, and conveyed by George Tonge, first whip, Mr. Canning, Mr. Cory Wright, and others to Little Canons which was close to the scene of the accident. Dr. West, Hoddesdon, and Dr. N. Day, Harlow, were soon in attendance, but deceased passed away without recovering conciousness.
George Tonge, first whip, said Mr. Slacke's horse rose very little; it struck the second bar and top bar with its knees. Deceased shot over the animal's head, and the horse turned a complete somersault on top of him. Witness saw deceased injured and dismounted and went to his assistance.
Dr. N. Day said the cause of death was fracture of the skull and injury to the brain.
The Coroner recorded a verdict of Accidental death, and expressed condolence with the relatives.
