In order to build a more comprehensive overview of the SLABBERT descendants in South Africa (and the world) you are encouraged to contribute to this board, no matter how small you may think your contribution may be.
Although the SLABBERT origin in the Netherlands is well documented (more on this next time) I found information after 1750 to be sparse and hard to find on the net.
In my particular case I am trying to discover the link between the original settlers and my grandfather Gert Petrus SLABBERT.
So, to all the Slabbies in the world, this is your board and you are very welcome here.

Re: SLABBERT in South Africa
Hi. Iam best known as John (as a child Johnny) My father was Gert Slabbert. (Skeef; Steve) He married Margret Hurter 1942.(My mother)I do not know his fathers names. He had three brothers and a sister. Izak the eldest(hope it is correct as we called him Sakkie) Christoffle (As we called him Tolla.Died as a youn man from TB) Silvia my aunt Last but not least was Benjamin. I too am trying ti trace my heretage. Benjamin had a pair of cuff links with a crest on it. He said it was our family crest. On the crest a sheild with a red heart in the middle, the sides a lion and a unicorn. On top of the shield rested a black helmut with a white feather. I do not remember a scroll beneath the shield. Have you come across this or help with finding out who we were or to which family group bid it belong too. Many thanhs

Re: SLABBERT in South Africa
Thank you so much for this information. I have not come across this description of the family crest before. Very interesting. Which area of South Africa was your father born in?

Re: SLABBERT in South Africa
Thaks Mark, My fater said that the original family settled in Jansenville, Eastern Cape. I think I forgot to mention that the crest contained a large red heart in the center of the shield All the best John

Re: SLABBERT in South Africa
Yes, the inland area around Port Elizabeth seems to be the area most Slabbert people come from during the 1800's. The Slabbert family can easily be traced back to Europe (1600's) but the 2 centuries afterwards in Africa is a bit confusing. If you are interested I can send you the Slabbert info I have collected. My family farmed in the Steytlerville area (I think). There are many Slabbert graves in PE, Jansenville etc.
I want to look further into the family crest design. Sounds interesting.

Re: SLABBERT in South Africa
I got more information from my Grandfather. This is what he has told me so far, I will add more as soon as he sends me more info.
My Grandfathers great grandfather, Francois Paulus Naude Slabbert was part of the Voortrekkers in the fight at Bloedrivier. He had a child, Daniel Slabbert who lived in Fouries Burg on a farm. There was a railway that went through his farm and they build a station on his farm that today still is known as Slabbert Stasie. Daniel Slabbert was also a "hero" when he took all the farmers cattle and horses and hit them from the English army who wanted to kill all livestock.
He had a chield called Johannes Slabbert, my Grandfathers dad who also lived in Fouriesburg.
I will try and get all the dates as soon.
Regards Zander
