Hello list - I wanted to share this letter that was kindly gifted to me. It's from from James Skuce, Blackrock Road, Cork, Ireland, to his nephew, Jno Skuce Senior, Hallville, Ontario, Canada. Dated Feb 11, 1882, Ireland

I need help with two things:

DONE - 1 - We've pinpointed the right John Skuce - It's John A. Skuce, son of Richard Skuce and Amelia Allen who settled in Hallville, Mountain Twp, Ontario, Canada

DONE - 2 - Accurate transcription of the letter. Here is the results thanks to the combined efforts of Diane Turnbull (the original letter holder), Jessica Harrison and Conrad Skuce and myself.

Thanks,
Natalie Skuce

"My dear Nephew,

I had your good letter in due time after your coming home. I am happy to know you had such agreeable duties to perform on your arrival.

I have been much from home since in England and only Iately returned, hence this very long delay in answering yours. We are just as I last informed you – well and very comfortable. I hope you can repeat this of you and yours in your midst. I also hope that your uncle Frank is still well and not distressed – would you please give him my tenderest love. I shall also ask you to give my warmest affections to your family and your brothers and sisters.

It is very possible I may go out this summer to the States to examine some tracts of country with the ulterior object of purchasing for myself and another for wheat growing purposes. – if I go out I shall with God’s help call to see you.

Would you inform me at what per acre good cleared land fit for growing wheat could be purchased in your country for prompt cash and could a person with capital live comfortably there and what amount of money you consider fair capital and on which you could live in comfort. Is the Winter to be borne by people not accustomed to it especially girls brought up unaccustomed to rough work.

This country is now very much disturbed - property and capital are not of much value, and one does not like to invest money to a large extent here now. I hope you will be good enough to write an early reply and to be particular in details.

Your uncle Charles family are, as I wrote last – well – but struggling - your uncle Tom’s family are also well and doing fairly. As I have informed you the Lord has blessed me much. I am very comfortable and contented – still I am not wedded to this country. Give me particulars of the life of the people where you live, are there any towns adjacent and are the country people well educated. How much per year could a family of say 6 people live comfortably on.

With kindest and best wishes for your happiness I remain your loving and affectionate uncle
James Skuce"
