Hello Lois,

I wish I could be of more assistance but I just quoted a lot of Mr. Andrew Skipper's information. I have not researched any of it as yet. If you could find him on Genealogy.com---Skipper Family Genealogy Forum, you could probably find a way to contact him. Hopefully the following address will connect you to the above site where I found the information:
http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&f......
The date on the note is Thursday, April 12, 2007. The title is "Native American Skippers".

Sorry I could not help.

Marilyn Skipworth Streetman

Marilyn. I read with much interest your information on Indian heritage, especially for Wat (Watt) Bailey from Virginia. I am trying to trace the family of this person and wondered if you have anymore info. My g-grandmother was Lillie Bailey, married to John Washington Skelton. I have Lillie's parents: Benjamin W. and Virginia Vaught, grandparents: Jeremiah Bailey and Mary Watkins, g-grandparents: Benjamin Bailey (1755-1813) and Ann E Watkins(1764-1812).

Hello Dwight,
I looked through my Skipworth files and did not find any reference to a Bookout--I am sorry. If you will tell me the names of some of the Skipworth that are related to your Bookout maybe I can find a connection. I am having a very difficult time finding any definite information connecting my Skipworth family with any Indian tribe, but it sounds like you may have a connection--that is great!!
Good luck with your searches,
Marilyn

Debbie, have you read Mr. Andrew Skipper's message posted on Genealogy.com---Skipper Family Genealogy Forum?? As you know we are connected to the Skippers through Richard Skipper/Skipworth & Sarah. He tells "the Skipper family of Tennessee is descended from several different Native American tribes. According to researchers on our family, the Skippers began intermarring with Native Americans not long after arriving in the New World in the 1600's. They continued to intermarry &/or live among native people until around 1832, when Arthur Skipper left the 'Indian Frontier' on the NC/SC border & moved to Tennessee."

"According to those associated with the TUSCARORA, NOTTOWAY, & WACCAMAW tribes the Skippers were either part of the leadership of these tribes or had a strong presence in each one." "George Skipper, who was possibly part TUSCARORA, married Mary Bailey around 1720. Mary is thought to be either the daughter or sister of Wat Bailey, later to become one of the chiefs of the NOTTOWAY tribe in southeastern Virginia. The NOTTOWAYS, like the TUSCARORA, & the CHEROKEE are part of the Iroquois language & culture & apparently absorbed some of their Iriquois brethren from the TUSCARORA tribe after the Tuscarora War of 1712-13. That may be the reason why later in 1749, George Skipper is listed as one of the 7 'Chiefmen' of the NOTTOWAY tribe."

"Around 1749, about 300 NOTTOWAY moved to the NC/SC border area which had been declared an 'Indian Frontier' by the governor of NC. This was the home of the present day LUMBEE tribe. The LUMBEE are part of the SIOUX language & culture but they also absorbed quite a few of the TUSCARORA & NOTTOWAY who were migrating south from Virginia & northeastern NC. The Skippers moved with their fellow NOTTOWAYS to this refuge area about this time & began intermarrying with other mixed blood people, particularly the Quick family, later described as one of the most prominent & wealthy mixed blood families in the area." "The Quick family wills of the early 1800's, were full of names associated with the LUMBEE tribe."

"Around 1794, some Skippers moved across the border to Marlboro Co., SC. These were Barnabas Skipper's family (possible son of George Skipper). Marlboro Co. has been described as a 'county of color' & no doubt refers to the many mixed blood families that lived there. These mixed blood families congregated in communities & attended mixed blood churches".

"Since moving to Tennessee the Skippers began to marry light skinned people with Irish, English, German & other names."

"Other things about the Skippers that seem to indicate their Native American ancestry: black hair & olive complexion." I (Marilyn) had black hair (now graying)& have olive complexion. I read elsewhere that these are common characteristics among the CHEROKEE. Also, "very curly black hair. This curly hair has been in the Skipper family for generations. Curly hair is also a trait of the LUMBEE tribe. This is probably due to the tribe being a refuge for runaway slaves".

At the end of this long & interesting posting is a comment added by a man named Two Hawks. He "is an enrolled council member of the NOTTOWAY Indian tribe of Virginia, from the HAUDENOSAUNEE Nation." The sixth greats grandfather of Mr. Two Hawks was "(Walter) Watt Bailey. Watt was one of the Chiefmen of the NOTTOWAY Indians of Southampton Co., Virginia, originally Surry Co., Virginia. Mr. Two Hawks is NOTTOWAY & eastern TSALAGI heritage." Watt Bailey was mentioned above.

It seems to find our Skipper/Skipworth Indian ancestors we probably need to look at all different tribes especially the NOTTOWAY, TUSCARORA, WACCAMAU & LUMBEE, & not concentrate just on the CHEROKEE.

I found Mr. Andrew Skipper's information very interesting & he has given me another search path. I hope he has done the same for others who read about him here.

If anyone has information on our Skipworth/Skipper Indian ancestry please contact me.

Your Cousin,
Marilyn Skipworth Streetman

Hello Rhonda,

I am Marilyn Skipworth Streetman. I am from the James B. Skipworth line. I happened upon information that says Jess M. Mc Guire Skipworth has a 1896, (Cherokee) Citizenship Application, ca. 1896-ca.1897. The item is from Record Group 75: Records of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, 1793-1989. I believe it originated in Oklahoma. Do you know IF he was accepted for citizenship or rejected??
If he was accepted then I will order his application. If he was rejected then my money will be best spent on another family member.

Thank you for your assistance.
Marilyn

Debbie, I have several numbers for you. You probably have most of this information but non-the-less:

Mary Ellen Hooker---
(1) http://awt.ancestrylibrary.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db...
(2) same as(1)to-- op=AHN&db=70772890&id=I510&ti=5542.

William Hooker, III---
(3) same as (1)to-- id=I1958&ti=5542.
There is information by Rose Parks that I do NOT have an address for. She says her source is, "Will of William Hooker, Bertie Co., N.C. 1757." The paper tells:
William Hooker on 1769 & 1780 Dobbs Co., N.C. tax lists, was militia volunteer, mentions land grants/warrants, "William is listed in the book, ""Descendants of William Hooker, I, Emigrant to Virgia 1657, from England"", by Brainard Hooker, August 1939, news articles, & lists his wife & children. I will mail this to you if you give me your mailing address.

William Hooker, III---
The following addresses give you an insite into some of his everyday life:
(4) http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/nc/dobbs/military/dobbs...
(5) same as (4) to-- nc/wayne/court/coll1776.txt
(6) same as (4)
(7) same as (4) to-- nc/bertie/court/hudson.txt
(8) same as (4) to-- nc/dobbs/court/sileven01.txt
(9) same as (4) to-- nc/dobbs/court/pate01.txt
(10) same as (4) to-- nc/dobbs/court/vause01.txt
(11) same as (4) to-- nc/dobbs/court/nbcourt.txt

William Hooker, II---
(12) http://awt.ancestrylibrary.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db...

William Hooker, I---
(13) same as (12) to-- &id-I1954&ti-5542

The will of William Hooker, 1717, Chowan Co., N.C.:
(14) same as (4) to-- nc/chowan/wills/hookerwm.txt

In "Kinfolk"/Fall/Winter 1988, page 6, "The Record of History" from The Rich Family Association---an
article "They Came to the Capes and Islands", Marjorie Cutts Drisko writes "...Some came as ministers who didn't preach to please the Church of England. Among these were Reverend John Wheelwright, Reverend THOMAS HOOKER, & Reverend Stephen Bachiler. These had earlier fled to The Netherlands for security. Then one by one they came to America where they were free to preach. But once they arrived in this country, they found themselves in hot water with the puritanical Massachusetts Bay Colony. THOMAS HOOKER gathered his faithful group & went from Cambridge to Connecticut where he helped found Hartford..."

Also, I have two pages titled, "The Hooker Family". I copied it from some book but I do NOT know what book. Maybe from the one above because the two are together. This tells that there were "at least two seperate Hooker fimilies in the United States". The Hookers of Massachusetts & Connecticut are of English descent. The Hookers of N.C. are of German descent. Gradually, those in N.C. changed the spelling of their name from HOOCKER to HOOKER. There is 1 3/4 pages more. At the end there is a note that their are also 15 pages of ancestor chart information which I did NOT copy. If you give me your mailing address I will also mail a copy of these two pages to you.

I hope you can get these addresses to cooperate with you. If they do not work please let me know. I tried to be very accurate but I could have missed a letter or number.

It seems that I had more information on the Hookers but this is all that is in their book. I guess I read & did not copy the rest.

Marilyn Skipworth Streetman
Shirley, I also have information from Teresa Shands. She and Debbie are very well informed and helpful. I appreciate them greatly!!!

As for George Washington Skipworth's Eastern Cherokee application, he is ours because all the names & dates agree with our family. It is the Miller Roll, #16068, action: rejected. Geo. W. was living in Ardmore, Okla., Indian Territory. Geo. dated the application 17 Dec. 1906. It was rejected because: ""It does not appear that applicants ancestors were parties to treaties of 1835-36-46.""

#7 of the application asks: ""By what right do you claim to share? If you claim through more than one relative living in 1851, set forth each claim seperately."" Geo. W. replied ((& I emphasize)): ""THROUGH MY MOTHER who was living then. Her NAME was POLLY RICH DAUGHTER of JESSE RICH, who was a son of ______ RICH. Who WAS a FULL-BLOOD CHEROKEE INDIAN WOMAN---given name of last not known to me."" Geo.'s mother was Mary Ann Rich (Polly Rich). If she was full-blood Cherokee then her parents (Jesse Rich & Elizabeth S. Savage) must be full-blood Cherokee also. Right??? Then her grandparents (William Rich & Mary Ellen Hooker) must be also. Right??? If you break the full-blood line then you can not be considered full-blood any longer.

#14 of the application asks: ""Were they ever enrolled for annuities, land, or other benefits? If so, state when & where:"" Geo. W. answers: ""Ryall Rich claims to have had POLLY (RICH) SKIPWORTH & her children enrolled in Indian Territory about 25 years ago, on Cherokee rolls."" Ryall was a son of Alford who was a son of Jesse & Elizabeth Savage Rich. Polly (Rich) Skipworth was the wife of James Bonaparte Skipworth. The children of James Bonaparte & Polly (Rich) Skipworth are: Louisa, Geo. W., Jesse McGuire, Nancy, James, ?, Joseph, Newton V., Simpson, Ausman, & Benjamin F. The approximate date of this enrollment would have been 1881.

#20 of the application asks: ""Have you ever been enrolled for annuities, land, or other benefits? If so, state when & where."" Geo. replies: ""Not unless Ryall Rich succeeded in his efforts to that end about 25 years ago."" I suppose this enrollment was not successful because no one seems to be able to find them on any Cherokee roll.

#21 of the application says: ""To expedite identification, claimants should give the full English & Indian names, if possible, of their paternal & maternal ancestors back to 1835:"" Geo. replied ((& I emphasize)): ""The PARENTS of MY MATERNAL GRANDFATHER; JESSE RICH THROUGH WHOM I DERIVE MY CHEROKEE BLOOD was named RICH, but I don't know their given names. They lived & died in North Carolina."" Translation: "my mother's grandfather" was William Rich. "Parents of" would be William & Mary Ellen Hooker Rich.

1. George Washington Skipworth
Laura Vaughan
2. James Bonaparte Skipworth
Mary Ann Rich (Polly Rich)
3. Jesse Rich
Elizabeth Sarah Savage (Betsy)
4. William Rich (Billy)
Mary Ellen Hooker (Mary Polly)

I don't know if this is helpful or more confusing!!

Who do you have listed as the parents of Mary Ellen Hooker?? I have William Hooker, III, & Mary Hymerick (possibly Laney Harper). Their children are listed as: Hymerick, William, Nathan, James, & Mary, b.c. 1760. Source: web> Title: Will of William Hooker, Bertie Co., North Carolina, 1757. William is listed as a descendant of William Hooker, I, emigrant to Virginia 1657, from England by Brainard Hooker, 1939.

Please let me know your thoughts on the above.
THANKS!!!
Marilyn Skipworth Streetman
Shirley, thank you for the clarification. I have read Newton's middle name as Varny and Vany. I thought Vany but was not sure. THANK YOU.

Do you have ANY INFORMATION on Richard & Sarah Skipworth/Skipper that you will share with me??? I am at a dead end & need a new path to search.

All the Indian information I have for our Skipworth family is just word-of-mouth---no proof. You probably know more than I.
1. George Washington Skipworth stated his Cherokee
heritage came from his Rich family.
2. On the computer I found that Mary Ellen Hooker was
Cherokee per her relatives: Morning Strong-Smith,
Sarah Strong-Odle, Jack Odle, & Rachel Odle-Savage.
3. William & Mary Hooker Rich's son, Jeremiah, married
Sidney Lowery who is said to have been Cherokee by her
great granddaughter, Anne Bell Culbertson.
If you have more, or differing, information on our Skipworth Indian heritage PLEASE share it with me.
Thank you for your help!!!
Marilyn Skipworth Streetman

So, Willis is your father, then you are my husband's dad's cousin. My husband's father is Audrin Skipworth who married Hattie Ann Hardwick in Two Sands Oklahoma. I have been told that Audrin ran away at age ten to work in the Oil Fields of Oklahoma, which was suppose to be an Indian Reservation. Hattie worked in a tent as a waitress and was also young. Do you have any documentation the family, up to and including photographs? My husband's father didn't know much about his family at all. He didn't know his grandfather, William at all and didn't know about Eli being in the civil war. Anything you may have would be extremely helpful! Thanks and nice meeting you!

I am wondering if this is where my husband's father got that he was indian. He said his father Audrin Skipworth ran away at age 10 to work in the oil fields of Oklahoma on an Indian Reservation Oil Field where he met and married Hattie Ann Skipworth. My husband's father didn't know anything other than his father's name and a couple of his siblings. If this is the same line, any help would be much appreciated!
Hi Marilyn...Yes I got your message and I thank you for the info. I usually work on the family history when I am on summer break or christmas away from school so I really haven't had the opportunity to do much. I like you ran into a brick wall at Polly Hooker. I do not have anything new to report. Are you a subscriber to ancestry.com and if so can you really find a lot of good info on there. I don't want to pay that much if I can't find anything. Let me know. Shirley

Hello... thanks for returning my email and would like to know if the info on polly hooker is from other relatives from the web? I have alot of information from Theresa Shands. I did find a George W. Skipworth where an application was filed for a roll number. This came from the Dawes or Guiolon Miller roll I can't remember which. the Application number is 16068. The only info was the name and the app. number and the state was IT which stood for Indian Territory. That meant an application was filed but who else filed with him and was this the right George W. and what was the year, I don't know. I can't find anything on Pollly Hooker other than wife of William. Let me know if you know anything about this. Shirley

I have quite a few "Rich" applications [that was shared with me from a very kind distant cousin] not a one of these Rich applications passed; all tried through Mary HOOKER Rich

Marilyn this will help you and Shirley a bit to clear up George W. Shipworth and his Indian Application.

No: 16068 Action: Reject
Reasons: It does not appear that applicant ancestors were parties to treaties of 1835-36-46#16068
George Washington Skipworth

On this same Indian Application G.W. lists Newton V as "Varny" however I have Newton's death record that record states "N.V."...John Ben Skipworth was his informant and son.
On census James B. and Mary lists his name as Newton Vany.
It's a toss up as to which one is really his name. Huh???

I have him listed as Newton Vany on all my documentations...reason being Varny just doesn't sound quite right...and by reading the census as Vany I decided to go that route.

If any one has any information on Richard or Sarah Skipworth and or children I would appreciate any or all help.

Teresa Shands and I have worked together for several years on the Skipworth whole surname trying to piece together where each family belongs. Quite a job for two people to start with until Teri started getting in touch with more and more people. She is a wonderful cousin to have.

I desend from James B. and wife Mary "Polly" Rich their son Ausman B. and wife Martha Ann Burnett [Burn it] their son Perry Staggs and wife Emma May Lawhorn my parents Warren Jason Ellis Jr. and Frankie L Skipworth then Debbie Ellis Hill and husband David Hill.

Hope this helps someone.
Marilyn,

When I comes to our Skipworth family I think I can be safe in saying they can be more confusing than ever.

Do you have a copy of the will that you mentioned below [see quote] or have knowledge of what Will Book and page number so that I can get a copy?

Who do you have listed as the parents of Mary Ellen Hooker?? I have William Hooker, III, & Mary Hymerick (possibly Laney Harper). Their children are listed as: Hymerick, William, Nathan, James, & Mary, b.c. 1760.

"Source: web> Title: Will of William Hooker, Bertie Co., North Carolina, 1757. William is listed as a descendant of William Hooker, I, emigrant to Virginia 1657, from England by Brainard Hooker, 1939."
