German verses Polish spelling

Surnames: Skibitzki, Skibitski, Skibicki
My family line is Skibitzki (Prussia), however I have found sites stating that while Skibitzki (or Skibitski) is the Polish spelling, Skibicki is the German spelling of the same name.

The family came over in the mid-late 1800's. I have found them on German ships, however I am having a hard time tracking them back beyond that. It appears they came from Posan (Poznan). If anyone has any information on a John (or Johann) Leo Skibitzki (or Skibicki) (born Feb 1854) and was married to Mary (maiden name unknown, born about 1861) from the Poznan area I would be appreciative of the information.

I've hit a lot of dead ends even on the Polish archives, so I'm thinking they may actually be in the German archives which may have been translated to Skibicki.
