Am looking for information pertaining to Charles C. Skewes, a native of New Jersey, who later resided (sometime after 1880) in Nevada County, California. He was a construction engineer and was at one time an employee of the Nevada Traction Company, having much to do with the building thereof. He died in Grass Valley, Nevada County, CA on 19 Aug. 1934.
Charles C. had a wife named Mary Ann (possibly nee Stevens), who was a native of England. The couple had the following known children:
Norman b. 25 Jan. 1893 in Alabama d. 27 Oct. 1918 in Nevada County, CA. (At the time of his death, Norman may have had a wife named Blanche (Trewhella) and a daughter named Ruth)
Edward G. who was a resident of San Jose at the time of his mother's death in 1946.
Charles E. b. 13 Feb. 1890 native of Bessemer, Jackson County, Alabama d. 17 Apr. 1946. He had a wife named Nellie; a son Charles (Bill) WWII vet; and a daughter who became Mrs. Francis George. His obituary stated he also had a cousin in Grass Valley, Nevada County, CA named Harry Skewes.
The 1910 census shows that Mary A. was the mother of 8 children, 3 of whom were still living. The above children comprise those still living, does anyone have information on the other 5? (It is sad to note, that by the time of Mary's death, she would ultimately leave only 1 surviving child, Edward G.)
Mary Ann (Stevens ?) Skewes died in Nevada City, Nevada County, CA on 19 Aug. 1946, scant months after she was brought back to Nevada County, from Sacramento, due to the sudden illness of her son, Charles E. Skewes.
Charles C., Mary Ann and their son, Norman are interred in the Skewes family plot at Old Elm Ridge Cemetery in Grass Valley, Nevada County, CA.
There is a street in Nevada County which was undoubtedly named for this family.
Does anyone recognize this Skewes family?
Father: Charles C. Skewes (1920 census n/o NJ age 64) died 8-13-1934 (resided on East Main St. at time of son's death)
Mother: Mary Ann (Stevens ?) Skewes (1920 census n/o ENG age 59) died 8-19-1946
Brother: Edward G. Skewes (Obit stated living in GV) survived him
Brother: Charles E. Skewes (Obit stated living in GV) died 4-17-1946
Although his obituary stated he left a wife and child, both of whom also had influenza, no other Skewes deaths were found in 1918 in Nevada County Death Index. The 1920 census does list a Ruth Skewes aged 3 yrs. 10 mo., living with her grandmother, Celia J. Trewhella and her daughter Blance Trewhella in Nevada City. Whether Ruth may have been Norman's daughter has yet to be determined.
The 1910 census shows Norman as 16 and living in the household of his parents Charlie C. (55) and Mary A. (46) Skewes. His father was listed as a native of New Jersey, his mother of England. Charlie E. was then 20; Norman 16, both were natives of Alabama and both were listed as college students. Mother, Mary A. is listed as the mother of 8 children, 3 of whom were still living. Norman's father, Charlie, was the Superintendant for the Traction Company. They lived in a home they rented at 226 South School Street, Grass Valley.
