Name: James SKAGGS
Sex: M
Birth: 1700 in On board a ship from Ireland
Death: ABT 1790 in Montgomery Co. VA
Note: James and Rachel lived in SW Virginia between 1740- 1755. Records of Botetourt County, Virginia, dated March 2, 1773, indicate that James sold 82 acres on New River, Meadow Creek, witnessed by William Christian, Stephen Tripp, Jonathan Elswick, and William Lesley. Theyalso sold land to Thomas Martin, William Buchanan, Richard Whitt, andAlbertus Brite. The sons of James and Rachel are listed in the "Pioneer Baptist Church Records of South-Central Kentucky and the Upper Cumberland of Tennessee 1799-1899" by C.P. Cawthorn and N. L. Warnell, copyright1895. Portions of it reads as follows: "When the gospel was firstsent to the Green River section of Kentucky, the land was wild anduncultivated. Alas! for the poor Baptists, death at the hands oflawless savage was an ever present chill on the ears of the living, and who could tell whether it would continue to advance with the quietof a blight, or yet, burst upon them with the fury of a tempest? Agreat number of these first Baptists were among the "Long Hunters" whocame from the "Baptist Valley" area of Southwest Virginia. Thesefamilies were the forerunners of the "foot-washing" Baptists whichsubsequently moved into Kentucky and established many of the Baptistchurches of the frontier land. Among the leaders were the Skaggsfamily consisting of Rev. James Skaggs and his brothers Henry,Richard, Jacob, Charles, Moses, and William. These were the early"Long Hunters" of 1761-1785 of which the Kentucky historians haverecorded much about. Henry and Richard were particularly prominent.Henry Skaggs was at the present site of Bowling Green, Kentucky in1755. A brother Moses was killed by Indians on his second trip intoKentucky. Richard Skaggs had three sons named Shadrach, Meshack, andAbednego. It was Meshack who was killed by Indians on the creek namedafter him in present Monroe County, Kentucky. The men who lived on thefrontier took protracted hunting trips into Kentucky, hence the name"Long Hunters". Later when Daniel Boone led a group of Yadkin farmersinto Kentucky, they used a wilderness track referred to as the "SkaggsTrace". This track became a part of the Boone Trace and theWilderness Road that led pioneers into Kentucky from Virginia. Thefirst settlement of the Green River Baptists was in Green County,Kentucky in 1780 and was known as Skaggs Station. It was establishedby Rev. James Skaggs and was the third in what is now Green County,Kentucky, Glover Station having been established in the fall of 1779and Ptiman's Station in March of 1780." More about Skaggs Trace can be found in the "Kentucky Register" #68,April 1970, pp. 118-123. According to that report, Skaggs Trace was ahunter's trail leading from Flat Lick to the Dick's River (now DixRiver in Lincoln Co. KY). It was named for either Henry or RichardSkaggs. Skaggs Trace left the Warrior's Path at Flat Lick in KnoxCounty, crossed Stinking Creek, and headed northwest along the westbranch of Turkey Creek, almost as U.S. 25E does today. It passednorth of present-day Barbourville, westward along Poplar Branch ofRichland Creek, passed Racoon Spring, and reached Laurel River atHappy Hollow Branch. The old trace went through what is now the LeviJackson State Park and followed the Little Laurel River northward, passing what is now London to the east. From the headwaters of LittleLaurel River, it went to the headwaters of Hazel Patch Creek, down thecreek to the Rockcastle River, down that river to Skaggs Creek, and upSkaggs Creek to the headwaters. From there it crossed over the LittleNegro Creek, a branch of Dick's River and went down Dick's River toCrab Orchard and Stanford. This road extended through Harrodsburg toLouisville by 1779. It is believed that more pioneer families usedSkaggs Trace than Boone Trace when journeying to Kentucky according tothis article. The Draper Manuscripts includes a statement that, "A number of Skaggsbrothers came to Green County, Kentucky, most of them very early, longbefore any settlement, and that they became the earliest settlers.James, Henry, John, Charles, and Richard Skaggs left records in GreenCounty, while Moses and Aaron Skaggs were said to have been killedthere."
