Searching for descendants of Dom. Gideon
Schaets (Skaats). Particularly interested
in Rinier Skaats (ca 1735-1814) who married
Elsje Schuyler and their son Hermanus who was
born ca 1856 and died before 1810.
Hermanus married Elizabeth Erwin, of whom
nothing is known. Would like particulars
of births deaths and marriages on Rinier,
and Elsje Schuyler Skaats, and the same
particulars for their son Hermanus and Elizabeth
Erwin Skaats.
Please respond by e-mail to bdavis@melbpc.org.au

I just fumbled into your query and was wondering if you had found your info yet. I have a book written by John K. Palmer and J. Michael Skaates which does have some info on Rinier Skaats and his wife and 11 children.

Hi,

I'm not Ken! but this is what I have.

There are a couple of books that have been printed. One is by de Boer written ca 1941. The title is similar to the one by Palmer and Skaates, but don't have it to hand at the moment.

and the more recent one is by John K Palmer & J Michael Skaates, The Schaets (Skaats, Skaates, Skates) Family in the Netherlands (1400-1652) and In America (1652-1983) (J M Skaates Associates Inc 210 Cooper Ave Hancock, Michigan 49930 , 1983).

He has copied a lot from the earlier Skaats book.

Neither have much on Isaac B or Isaac V Skaats.

For Isaac B, I have the following: He married Anna Rhodes Nafis. He was Isaac Blank Skaats, son of David Skaats and Mary Blank. He was born in 1795 and christened 9 Aug 1795 in New York City. His occupation was a cartman. They had at least one child, Mary Jane Skaats born ca 1820 in Queens.

For Isaac V, I have the following:
he married Eglandtine Peterson who was born ca 1828. They were married ca 1842

They had the following:

Mary ca 1843
Sarah Ann ca 1845
Isaac ca 1848
David ca 1855
Willie ca 1868

This information is based on the 1850 census of New York City and the 1880 census of Brooklyn, New York. Eglantine is shown as a widow. Her mother is with her in this census.

the Grantor index indicates that Isaac
and Eglantine his wife granted land to David S. SKAATS.

My guess is that Isaac V may be related to Richard V Skaats. The V stands for Varick. Richard was a younger brother of Isaac B. Skaats. The Varick name comes into the family in the mid 1700's.

Does any of this help you?

Regards,

Beth Shoemaker Davis
