Is there more than one place named Skaar???

My family is from the Skaar valley south of Bergen. My cousins still live there. (We're all descended from Pedr Skaar and Christina Vika.) There are a lot more Skaar families out there in the US than there should be from such a small place. I'm just curious.

Hi Barbara,
Skaar means "rocky crevice" in Norwegian so I'm sure many places share that name. My great . grandfather, Samson Skaar, came in Brooklyn, NY in 1922. He was from a small farm on the island of Tysnes, south of Bergen. There were other farms nearby and those people, not related, were named Skaar also. My family and I have visited Skaar numerous times..it is beautiful. My great grandparents retired back to Norway and built a house in Skaar. We still have the family farm there, run by my second cousin once removed, Ole Skaar.

Thanks for posting! I was once told that Skaar was like Smith in Norway - I was wondering if they might all be related somehow, but it looks like that's not the case. My family still has a farm in their Skaar valley, too. It is also south of Bergen, but not on an island. My 2nd cousin lives there. I haven't met him and I'm forgetting his name. The cousins I write to live in Lavik - Leif & Jorunn.
