Yes, Sjoblom and Shoblom are the same. My grandfather when he came to the US had the spelling Sjoblom, but the Americans were unable to pronounce it so the name was changed. I'm not sure if it was done while he was a child or after he grew up. As a child he lived in Minnesota.

My great Grandfather's name was Victor, he maried Soffie Bartel at age 14 and they came from Finland along with his two brother John and another and with Soffie's brother with the last name of Burthell. They arived in the pacific Northwest, worked for a year before having the money to move to Duluth Minn. Victor's mothers name was Helene. According to my grandmother, The family was moving because of a hunger strike from Sweeden to Finland, there last name was very common, and were told upon entering Finland, they had to change there last name. The family decided to change the name to Sjoblom which means Sea Flower because they were all fisherman.

My grandparents did come to America in early 1900's from Sweden. John Sjoblom and wife Louisa (not sure that is her correct name) They had two sons, six daughters, eldest daughter my mother, Berta Christine. They did change the spelling to Shoblom.

Hi Jean,

Shoblom is the wrong spelling for Sweden. It is probably Sjöblom, which would sound just about the same.
