Hi lizsiwick,

I don't know if this will help or not. My grandfather's last name was Krzyskow and he immigrated to Canada in 1906. He immigrated from his farm in Probizhna, which is near Chortkiv. He came over alone as a young man, so there was family left behind. His father was Felix (Feliks) and mother Petronela/Petrunela Kolezycka or Kolczycka. He was Polish Catholic.

At that time the area was under Austro-Hungarian rule and was called Galicia. This area had Poles, Ukrainians, and Jews. The Polish border has moved (or disappeared) throughout its history, so we had always heard that my grandfather (and grandmother, from a nearby town) had come from Poland, but on a current map, it's now in the Western Ukraine.

Because my ancestors came over prior to WWI, I don't know the history of that location during WWII. But it might be worth researching to figure out if maybe it was considered Polish.

I also used google maps to map Probizhna to Treblinka, but cannot say if this would be a logical Nazi camp to send a person from Probizhna to or if there would be another one closer by.

Hope this helps!
Monica
