Longmont Ledger (Longmont, Boulder County, Colorado)
April 1, 1898
SIPE--In Longmont, Friday, March 25, 1898, of cancer of the liver, Jacob C. Sipe, aged 64 years and 15 days.
Another member of the Grand Army of the Republic has dropped from the ranks and has gone to answer another roll call. Mr. Sipe has not been a well man for several years, although he had not given up work. Since he recovered from the attack of pneumonia last winter, had has failed in strength until it was believed by his physician that the main trouble was cancer of the liver and there was no hope for his life.
Jacob C. Sipe was born in Dayton, Ohio, March 10, 1834; was one of nine children; his mother died when he was but nine years of age, and at that time the children separated, never to be united again in this world, and Jacob became a wanderer, having no permanent home in his youth. He was with John Brown, the famous abolitionist, during his troubles in Kansas, but did not go with him to Harper's Ferry. In 1859 he came to Colorado, but the war breaking out he returned to Marshalltown, Iowa, and enlisted in Co. D, Fifth Iowa Infantry; was wounded in the leg at the battle of Iuka, MIss., Sept. 19, 1862; after serving about three years in the infantry, he was transferred to the Fifth Iowa Cavalry. He was married to Rebecca Jane Bowles in Marshalltown, Iowa, and four children were born to them three boys and one girl One boy died at the age of eight years. They came to Colorado in June, 1878; but went back and forth several time overland, but most of the time for the past sixteen years have lived in Longmont. In 1893 they went to the World's Fair in a wagon, but sold their team in Chicago and returned by rail.

Mr. Sipe was an honorable man, and respected by all who knew him. He leaves two sister , a wife and three children.
Funeral services were conducted at the house by Rev. C. L. Hyde, after which McPherson Post No. 6, G. A.R. and Longmont Lodge No. 9, I. O. O. F. took charge of the remains and escorted them to the Longmont cemetery, where joint services were held at the grave. He was a member of the Banner Lodge, No. 123, I. O. O.F. of Mashalltown, Iowa.

I will request this obit be added to find-a-grave memorial 61017273
