NEW MIDDLETOWN – Services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the Clemente Funeral Home in New Middletown for Lawrence B. Sipe, 85, who passed away March 7, 2014, at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center after an extended illness

He was born in New Middletown, Ohio May 14, 1928, to Clara “Curly” and Lawrence B. Sipe Sr.

He was a 1946 graduate of Springfield Township High School.

Upon graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was part of the peace keeping force stationed in Tokyo. He was attached to the First Calvary in the Eighth Regiment as a heavy weapons specialist.
He attended the War Crimes Trials being conducted in Tokyo at the conclusion of World War II.

Larry worked for Automatic Sprinkler after his discharge from the Army and then as a brakeman and engineer for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad and CSX from 1951 until his retirement in 1988.

Larry was an avid sports fan, especially for Youngstown State University Football, where could be found in the locker room after every home contest, talking to players and coaches. He also enjoyed watching the Browns, Indians and Cavs, as well as The Ohio State University Buckeyes and Miami Hurricanes.

He was married to the late Eleanor Manda Sipe, who passed away Feb. 21, 2013.

Besides his parents and wife, Eleanor, he was preceded in death by his stepson, Samuel Manda; brothers, Kenneth Sipe, John Sipe, Robert “Skippy” Sipe; and sisters, Doris Blower and Margaret Menn.

He is survived by his children, Janet (Jeff) Dyer of New Middletown and Gary (Kathy) Sipe of Canfield; stepson, Michael (Rina) Manda of Niles; his niece, Lynnette (Wallace) Swanson of Boardman, whom he raised as a daughter, and his niece, Jeanette (Steve Collinsworth of Youngstown, Ohio; and sisters, Ruth Rabovsky of New Middletown and Carol Reese of Sarasota Fla.
He also leaves many grandchildren and great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that material contributions be made to Hospice House, 9803 Sharrott Road, Poland, OH 44514.

Calling hours will be held at the Clemente Funeral Home in New Middletown on Sunday, March 9, from 2 to 5 p.m. and from 10 to 11 a.m. on Monday, one hour prior to the service.

Burial will be at Zion Lutheran Cemetery in New Middletown.
