Hi Carol
I hope you get this message after such a long time and hope the following will be of some help if you don't already have it.
Taken from "Pioneers of the Ovens and Townsmen of Beechworth" by M. Roslyn Shennan, a limited edition published 1990.
"James Simpson (1852), Sawmiller, Stanley.
The son of John Simpson and Sarah (nee French, James Simpson was born about 1831. He settled first at Tarrawingee where he was farming. He was married to Bridget Connors and their family included daughters Mary, Isabel, Gertrude, Sarah and Ellen, and a son John. In the 1870's Simpson moved with his family to Stanley where with his brothers Charles and John, he opened a sawmill. Buying his brothers' shares, he ran the mill on his own, opening other milling premises in the district. The main mill, situated at Back Creek Stanley was partly destroyed by fire in 1892 and four years later the Hillsborough mill also burned down. James Simpson died in Beechworth in 1898." (From Ovens and Murray Advertiser 17/6/1899.
James Simpson is photo No.20 on a collage of photographs held at the Burke museum Beechworth.
Just in case you are unfamiliar with this area, Stanley is about 10 kilometres out of Beechworth and Tarrawingee is about 24 kilometres out of Beechworth towards Wangaratta.
Good luck with your research - Trish Lawson - Beechworth.
