Velma Elizabeth Sicafuse, 99, longtime resident of Struthers, Ohio passed away Thursday, May 13, 2010, at Shepherd of the Valley.

Mrs. Sicafuse was born Jan. 28, 1911, in Youngstown, Ohio a daughter of Uriah and Elsie McKalip Allshouse.

Velma graduated in 1930 from Struthers High School, Struthers, Ohio, where she was captain of the girls basketball team.
She attended the Youngstown School of Business and later worked as a bookkeeper for Mazda Lamp, and Frank Produce in Youngstown, OH.

Velma married George Woodrow “Woody” Sicafuse on Sept. 2, 1939.
Velma was an active member of the Struthers Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday school for over 50 years.
She supported the Fifth Street Elementary School and was a co-founder of the Struthers PTA.
She served as past president of the PTA and received an honorary lifetime membership.
Velma volunteered her time and talents for the Girl Scouts, Struthers High School Band Boosters and Job’s Daughters, Bethel 23 in Youngstown.
and was an active member of the Struthers Study Club and the Struthers Historical Society.

Following the unexpected death of her husband, former Struthers Police Chief, Velma went to work for the City of Struthers in 1964.
Velma served in the Auditor’s office and Tax Department before becoming secretary to Mayor Tom Creed and Mayor Anthony Centofanti.
She also served on the staff of Congressman Lyle Williams.

Velma is survived by her children, Ronald (Billie) Sicafuse of Poland, Donald (Rosemary) Sicafuse and Georgeann (Gary) Houck of Struthers and Audrey (Warren) Morrison of Uniontown; five grandchildren, Mark Sicafuse, Sharon Sicafuse, Eric (Doree) Houck, Lynn Houck and William Woodrow (Amy) Sicafuse; two great-granddaughters, Alaura Lynn Sorokach and Leah Bella Como; one sister, Coletta Hodge; and one sister-in-law, Ruby Allshouse.

Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Eugene, Charles and U.T. “Jack” Allshouse.

Family and friends will be received Monday, May 20, 2013 from 9 to 10:45 a.m. at the Struthers Presbyterian Church, 110 Poland Ave., where services will be held at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Richard Ferris officiating.

Interment will follow at Lake Park Cemetery.

The Sicafuse family would like to thank the staff of Shepherd of the Valley and the residents and their families for all of their love and care given to Velma and to Hospice of the Valley for their support.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home in Struthers.
