Snyder - Powell - Lee - Shuman - Moreland

Looking for the daughters of Etta Elizabeth Powell born abt 1930 in Bulloch, GA. died abt 1955.

The daughters were:
Gail E. Moreland b.1953 GA
Jean Marie Moreland b.abt 1954
Mary Ann Fail(b.abt 1955 GA
It is believed that Gail is deceased. I think Mary Ann Fail's married name is Shuman.

Jean Marie Moreland was adopted by an aunt or maybe a great aunt named Eva Lee. Jean Marie's name was changed to Frances Snyder. So either Eva or Frances married a Snyder. I think probably Eva.

I believed they all lived in or around Bulloch County, GA. I am hoping to contact Jean Marie Moreland/Frances Snyder. Her father was my uncle.
The first sign of her is in the 1910 Census with parents Samuel and Blache Shuman. I believe that Blanche is her mother but Samuel is a step-father b/c she is not in his family in the 1900 Census.
Pearl,
Don’t know if you already have been found this on PA Genweb site about Shuman’s and thought you might be interested:

01 Nov 1837 - Abraham Shuman (Columbia Furnace) Mary Rittenhouse (Washington City) --- a brother to your Isaiah?

10 Jan 1839 - Isaiah Shuman Mary Ann Miller

Source: PAGENWEB, COLUMBIA CO., PA, WPA Project 5175, Columbia County Marriages from the newspaper "Columbia Democrat", http://www.pagenweb.org/~columbia/marrmain.htm.

Also have info on Mary Elizabeth Knapp family---have I contacted you before? Any way here is a source for her family as well - Genealogical & Family History of the Wyoming & Lackawanna Valleys, Penn., Vol.2, p. 625, Chap.: The Wyoming & Lackawanna Valleys which had a bio on a man named Major----Peter’s oldest child Harriet married a David Major. I am descended from Harriet’s & Mary Eliz.’s younger brother, Peter who married Amanda Knecht.
Mary Eliz. & Peter’s father, the 1st Peter named in the article is the point where I have hit the proverbial brick wall. If you ever come across any info supporting who the first Peter’s father was please contact me. I feel that somehow they are connected with Zephaniah Knapp and his son Joseph who are buried in the Marcy Methodist Cemetery in Duryea, PA. Mary Eliz.’s brother, Peter and wife, Amanda Knecht as well as their son Clark are buried there too very close to Joseph Knapp’s son John----there are some empty or possibly unmarked plots between. When I stopped there the caretaker wasn’t very helpful but wanted to charge me $100 for online info I already had----he wouldn’t let me look at any records but said I had to make a previous appointment even though I told him I had traveled the whole way from Texas. Frustrating !! Anyway hope this is of some help and if you’d like any further info on Mary Eliz. siblings or her brother Peter’s descendants will be happy to share. Take care------------Sherryl Clark

Ruth A. Shuman Mendell 1921-2011

MENDELL Ruth A. Shuman Mendell. Ruth and Bill were a happily married couple for almost sixty nine years. Bill passed recently on June 2, 2011. Ruth followed her beloved husband Bill to be united with him on July, 6, 2011.
The way they lived life together, and the dignity with which they faced death together sets a good example to follow for those who were privileged to be acquainted with them. They agreed to die peacefully at home surrounded by their loved ones and caring hospice members, setting a tone reminiscent of the early part of the prior century when they were born.
They were both born in Columbus, Ohio.
Ruth's birthdate was May 21, 1921. She was born to Abe and Carrie Taussig Shuman. Her mother Carrie was born in Brooklyn, New York. Her father was an immigrant from Latvia. Ruth met her "bashert", or divinely ordained soulmate Bill in the summer of 1941. They married on September 14, 1942. Ruth attended the University of Cincinnati and studied Art. She specialized in oil painting. She taught piano for over forty years to multitudes of students in Bethesda, Maryland, and Columbus, Ohio.
Ruth lost her brother Harold Irvin Shuman on May 28, 1945. He was serving in the Navy, on the U.S.S. Sandoval, and was killed by the first of three kamikaze airplanes off of Okinawa.
Ruth was also predeceased by her brother Richard Shuman and his first wife Betty.
Bill and Ruth have two daughters who survive them, Melissa Mendell and Sonny Davis. She leaves behind one special granddaughter, Tatiana Mendell.
Also she is survived by her niece, Luona Shuman; nephews, Dr. Lawrence (Linda) Mendel, David (Teresa) Mendel, Andrew (Ellen) Mendel; and niece, Janet (Michael Newman) Mendel. Also, she leaves ten grand-nieces and nephews; and one great-great-nephew, Avery Mendel. Also, she leaves behind a cousin, Peter Hecht.
Funeral service will be held on Friday, July 8, 2011 at 11 a.m. at the SCHOEDINGER EAST CHAPEL, 5360 E. Livingston Ave. Cantor Star Trompeter officiating.
Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens, Temple Israel Section.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Ruth to the American Cancer Society , 870 Michigan Avenue, Columbus, Ohio 43215.
Visit www.schoedinger.com to share a favorite memory of Ruth.

Published in The Columbus Dispatch from July 7 to July 8, 2011

I know from your Holt.ged that we're working on the same line and would love to fill in all the blanks on 'aunt lil'. is there any way that you could run papers thru a copy machine, and then we could share the search and maybe get back to the 'beginning' twice as fast? Do you have any info on Gr.Grandpa's and Lil's brother Benjamin? I can find nothing on him past his marriage to Maud Cooley(5 May 1907, Chicago) and WW1? draft registration.

Russell, I've just had occasion to view your Public Member Tree. It appears my mother, Opal Ruth (Shuman) Bragg,youngest dau of Leander "Lee" Shuman, was a first cousin to your ancestor, Ora (Shuman) Briggs, dau of Clarence Shuman, brother of Leander. I would enjoy exchanging family info with you. I'm age 77 now and have been researching "family" since 1972. I haven't been able to research in Germany yet, but perhaps I can give you additional Shuman info. If you wish, you can contact me at flamefogg@att.net. Mary Godsell

Russell - Thanks, but I no longer believe SCHWABENTHAN to be Elizabeth's maiden name.Based on Elizabeth's & Martin's daughter, Annie SCHUMANN's, marriage to John TREECE of Floyd Co, IN in Holy Trinity Church, New Albany, Floyd County, IN, on 26 Aug 1841, a newspaper account says her father, Martin of Louisville, KY, was present, along with her Uncle, Johannes (John) SCHUMANN of Floyd Co, IN, proving them brothers. Johannes had married in Bavaria, Mary STETE. The church marriage record of Elizabeth's and Martin's other daughter, Mary Catherine (SCHUMANN) BAKER, translates from the Latin roughly as: "On this day, 31 October (1847) were proclaimed to be joined in matrimony, Louis BAKER, son of Joseph BAKER and El. (abbr for Elizabeth) SCHUBEN, and Mariam (Mary) SCHUHEMANN, dau of Martin SCHUHEMANN and El. (abbr for Elizabeth) STET. Witnesses: John SCHUHEMANN (Mary's brother or Uncle?)& Margaretta FEHN." So, I now believe Elizabeth's maiden name was STET or STETE and that perhaps two SCHUMANN brothers married two STETE sisters! Additionally, the wife of Nicholas SCHWABENTHAN may have been a third STETE sister, thus the connection. From the burial list for St Mary's Cemetery in Lanesville, Harrison Co, IN (near Floyd Co): " SCHWABENTON, Nick (13 Sept 1785-30 Aug 1865) and SCHWABENTON, Anastatia (24 Dec 1788-14 Feb 1851)." Russell, if you are researching SCHUMANs, I hope some of this is helpful to you. Mary Godsell (flamefogg@att.net)

Martin Henry senior's son, Martin Henry first married what some people think was a women named Martin and had more than several children with her. This is who we are descended from, his first wife. This was in South Carolina. At the same time he had another wife in Byran County, Georgia. Her name was Pharabee Sauls and he had alot of children with her. All of those chldren had the surname Sauls, but when Martin's first wife died. Those children became legally named Shuman. So yes, there is a lot of confusion when you see the same names. Pharabee lived to be quite old.

Marie

Thank you, Grandma Marie! That's exactly why I asked. :)

When I first started doing this a few years ago, I would copy just about everything from Family Trees (as Ancestry hints), barely checking the info. Because of that, I had so much incorrect info. Now I take all of those with a grain of salt, and check everything before including it in my tree. And if I'm unsure of something, I research it and/or just don't include it. But even still, I miss a few things.

(I always think it's funny when people show that someone was born 10 years after their mother was born, or things like that!)

So Martin Henry Sr's father was definitely Henry/Heinrich, but NOT from Germany, correct?

Was he from what we now know as Austria, then? Do we know where? I know there were a lot of people from the Salzburg region sent overseas...was the Shuman family part of that? And why were they sent out of their country? Persecution?

I know you've done A LOT of research on this line. I'm very much looking forward to seeing what you have! And incredibly appreciative...I love history & genealogy, but I have so many brick walls in my lines, that it's nice to find that someone else has been able to do research on other lines, ya know? Thank you!

I know someone found a lot on Martin Henry Sr...perhaps it was you. But I was able to read about the land grant from King George, his time in the War--apparently receiving lands from the king was not enough to stop him from joining the other team! Ha-ha!

Questions about that: he had land in SC and GA...in his will, he also stated that his father had left him his estate in "Germany." Is that the case?

And I found where a Martin Shuman received land in the 1832 Cherokee land lottery. Would that be one of our Martins? And which one?

If you ever get a chance, please take a peek at my tree. I'd like to know if I have the right documents for the correct people.

Thanks, again!

JJB's father was Joseph M. Shuman; mother was Harriet(maiden name unknown)Joseph M's father was
Martin Henry Shuman, then that Martin Henry Shuman's father was also named Martin Henry Shuman (who was in the revolutionary war) whose father was Henry. Who ever started putting the town in Germany is incorrect. They are making an assumption just because they found a Henry Schuman coming to Maryland. When this happens alot of misinformation gets copied into other peoples trees.
True genealogist need to have documentation.

Marie

All right, here's my line that I know for sure:

My grandmother is Myra Belle Cantey.

Her father was Benjamin Franklin Cantey.

His mother was Selena Shuman.

Her father was Joseph John B. Shuman.
~~~~~
I *THINK* his father was Joseph Shuman, son of Martin Henry Shuman, Jr., son of Martin Henry Shuman/Schumann of Germany.
Does this match anything you guys have? I know Schumann's father was named Henry (or more likely Heinrich), but I'm not finding anything on him.
Was Martin Henry from Austria or Germany? I've seen that he was from Darmstadt...which is kind of funny, since I used to live near there!
Look forward to hearing what you all have! My tree is public, so feel free to take a peek if you want to see if I have everything in there correctly.
As I mentioned in my previous entry, I was chasing Martin Shuman, thinking that was JJB Shuman's father. I believe it's actually his great-uncle, or great-half-uncle.
There were so many Shumans in the SC/GA area, it's hard to know who's who, especially with so many similar names.
Okay...so Joseph JOhn B. is the son of JOSEPH Shuman?
I have him as the son of MARTIN and Harriet E. Shuman (later remarrying Mary/May), and Martin's parents as Martin Henry & Phoebe Shuman.
I'm getting confused! I was just looking at all the census records...in 1830, I have Martin in Bryan, GA...but there's another one in Beaufort, SC...which makes a lot more sense to me, since JJB was born and married there.
I'm thinking I got mixed up in the wrong Martin Shuman family. Where did I go wrong?
Hi Carla,
If James was born in 1807, that could be Henry's generation(he was born in 1791). Henry's siblings were George(~1797),John,Catharine,Rebecca, Anna Maria(1784), Elizabeth(1789),Susanna (1796)and Magdelena(1795). All were born in Berks County, PA.
I suppose any of Conrad's children above might have had children at a rather young age. I know Elizabeth had a child in 1811, named Abraham. Of the others, I only know about Henry's children. There were no children of Henry named James; his first born, Jonas, was born in 1816 in Union County, PA.
Because I know so little of Conrad's children other than Henry, I would have to believe any connections we might have go back at least that far.
If we all keep at it, sooner or later we'll find the missing links between the various families...
Thanks!
-Dave
Hello Dave,
I noticed your reply to Kim and believe, but am not certain that my Shuman may have some connection to yours - perhaps son of Henry and brother of Frederick???.  My John T was born in MO in about 1833; however his father James was born c.1807 in Ohio (just where I don't know). He married a Mary Ann Riney and James obtained a land grant in Clark County MO in about 1831 where his brother-in-law Richard was - Richard was apparently in St. Patrick. Do you have a James somewhere in the family tree?
Best regards,Carla   carlv47@btinternet.com
Hi Kim,
Thanks for answering! Here's a quick synopsis of my line:
Christoffel Schuhmann was born ~1730 in Darmstadt, Germany.  A Stofel Schuman arrived in Philadelphia Sep.13,1749 on the ship "Edinburg". It is believed that this is the same Christopher listed in GOSHENHOPPEN Roman Catholic Mission ST. PAUL'S MISSION, CHURCH OF THE MOST BLESSED SACRAMENT BAPTISMS, 1741-1818, Compiled by BARBARA BRADY :
SCHUHMANN, Andrew, Elizabeth, John, Adam, William, Barbara, Conrad, of Christopher Schuhmann and his wife ---, had been baptized privately, ceremonies supplied 31 (sic) Apr 1769 in Langerschwamm.
Conrad Shuman was born on 30 Jan 1762 in Montgomery Co, PA, died on 3 Apr 1838 in Union County, Pennsylvania, at age 76, and was buried in St.Peter Reform cemetery.
Names of children were found in Conrad’s will and noted as John, Henry, George, Mariah, Susan, Catharine and Elizabeth. They were all born in Colebrookdale Twp,Berks County, Pa. where Conrad owned land, and relocated to Union County in 1819.
Henry Shuman was born on 30 Sep 1791, and died on 5 Apr 1866 in Wyandot County, Ohio.  FREDERICK SHUMAN, son of Henry and Elizabeth (Arno) Shuman, was born in Union County, Penn., September 26, 1818. and moved to Ohio in 1836. They first located in Hancock County, but  one year later moved to Carey,Ohio and purchased land.
My family has remained in that region until my father’s generation.
I have no records of what became of Conrad’s parents or siblings.
Since Ernst was born in 1805 in Darmstadt, he would be about Henry’s generation so they would likely be cousins at best. But when I read, almost verbatim, the story my great grandfather told about an ancestor having been postmaster in Okley (later Shumansville), it certainly raised my interest. It may be a blind lead, but I’m at the point where I’m following every slim clue I can find…
I have many details on Conrad's children and families.
Thanks for any insight you may have!
Regards,
Dave Shuman
This seems to have started with someone saying James D.
Shuman was born in Ohio in 1807 (I wanted to know where in
Ohio and never got an answer).
My Shumans came either from New Jersey or eastern PA, to
what became Guernsey Co., Ohio.  The one thing I can say
about them is that in Ohio, at least, there are no James
Shumans in my lines (although there was a James Shuman who
died ca. 1815 in the same area).  My line is John Shuman
m. Elizabeth Stephens 1818 (second wife); Jonathan Shuman
b. 1828 m. Elizabeth Voorhes; Albert Shuman m. Margaret
Beam; Leola Shuman m. Harold Siens (my grandparents) -- in
case this connects to anyone.  (It never does.)
Hello Sharon,
I hope you are still looking at this posting board.  I too am a descendent of James and Mary Ann (Riley) through John T & Elizabeth (Reese) then through William & Amanda (Doherty) then William F & Estella Carrie (Haley) then Clyde & Elsie (Olen) - these were my grandparents.  I am not sure we are descended from the same James as my John T was born in Missouri as far as I know.
Hi Doug.  It's nice to see someone posting about the Shumans!  If you'll give me some more information on your Shuman line, I'll see if I can make a connection with the King William Co and Caroline Co Va. Shumans.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Kim Wrenn
Durham NC
Hi. I'm back in the game about ancestors. I am related to the shuman/updegraff families from Goodrich & Atlas Twsp. Genesee County,Michigan. I have what I believe lots of info about the Updegraff family. But am still in the dark about the Shumans!
Deacon John
Hi All,
I have been researching the Conrad Shuman line, and have long been confused by my great grandfather's statement that Conrad was a postmaster in Okley VA (later became Shumansville). I recently found a similar assertion in "The George Shuman Family Geneology" in which the exact things were said of a C.A. Shuman (whose father was listed as Ernest). C.A. Appears to be the same as Charles A in your line.
Given my G Grandfather spent his life in Wyandot County, Ohio, it's hard to imagine where he mistakenly got information about the Virginia line. I am left to assume that one or more descendants of Charles found their way to Ohio and were known by my family.
Can anyone help shed some light on this mystery? I'd love to find a link between our families!
Thanks,
David Shuman
Hi Vilda.
I have not been on Ancestry  for a while.  (Caregiving for cousin w cancer).  Do you still have any pictures from your Aunt Vilda's collection?  My line goes through William Thomas (Bill) Shuman who was brother of my Uncle Henry,  your grandfather.  Let me know if you get this and if you still have pictures.  I would love to get copies of any that were of any of my ggrandfather Rutherford Shuman's family. I have information to share with you about our family.
Thanks,
Bonnie
bocarn@bellsouth.net
