Hello, Malcolm and Everyone Else!
My name is Mark Schub, formerly of Chicago, and now in LA. I don't recognize any of the names in the previous posts, but perhaps one of the names from my ancestry will ring a bell for one of you.
GGrandfather Rubin Schub and wife, Dvora (nee Scher) from Ekaterinolsav, Ukraine to Chicago in 1913.
His son, Samuel (Schmuel) and wife Golde (nee Saltzman) from Ekatirinoslav, Ukraine to Chicago in 1913
Another son, Jake (Yankel) and wife Fruma from Ekaterinoslav, Ukraine to Chicago in 1913
Another son, my grandfather, Morris (Moiche) SHUB, with wife Lena (nee Padnos) and child Isidore, from Vyun (Vjun?), Byelorussia (Belarus) to Chicago in 1905-06.
I recall hearing the story that my grandfather fled Vyun to avoid conscription into the army for the Russo-Japanese War, and I can only speculate that the rest moved to Ekaterinoslav afterwards (perhaps to avoid pogroms?) before emigrating to America.
SHUB, I was told, was the original spelling of my grandfather's name; I heard he changed it to Schub several years after he arrived in Chicago. On the other hand, his parents and brothers all spelled it SCHUB on the Ellis Island ship manifests. I have no explanation for the discrepancy. Does anyone?
