Please help clarify. I tend toward believing census records and marriage certificates and so on...so wondering.... (please check for bible records and tombstone records, etc.)
1850 census of Stark County Illinois shows William S Shockley b 1800 in Maryland and wife named Tabitha (or her nickname) born 1821 in Indiana. I know I have a valid connection so I write down the children: John J, Mary J, Sally A, Solomon R, James S, Davis S and George W who is born Feb 1850 and a baby.
Also: I have some pretty good reasons to think the more specific location which is not stated in the census is actually either Toulon or West Jersey, Illinois. These are small little villages in 1850 and close to one another. (so I treat the above as FACT)
Still with me, right?
Allright, now the question is not so easy...who is and (also) why is there a tree outlining a Wiliam N (for Noble) Shockley intertwined with the guy named above ? It changes the middle initial from S to N (for Noble) (there is a VALID Shockley to Noble family connection just not so sure Tabitha is a Noble or not) This guy Also leads back to Maryland.
I suppose I can guess why issues exist....but want to determine the marriage(s) between Rownd and Shockley (some lived adjacent on census report(s), and get the accurate story down VERY correctly.
There is another connection--seemingly family line connecting-- census in Ripley County Indiana which would seem to indicate that the marriage took place and that William Shockley born near the same time, got a wife with a package 'deal' and a few kids thrown in with the mix.
So those members of Shockley who are the experts with the real data please help clarify. I realize there is a pretty good web here....and the census records get sketchy, too.
thank you.

I'm a little confused by your question, and I don't see your William S. in my tree (which is only partially documented) of Shockleys. I show the William Noble Shockley b. 1800 married to Elizabeth Livingston, not to a Tabitha.

However, if you look at the Shockley family, the most common first names for boys are William, Thomas and Richard. There are dozens, if not hundreds, with these first names. So it shouldn't be a surprise that more than one William might have been born in or around 1800.

As to them both going back to Maryland, the first known Shockley immigrant moved from England to Maryland, and most Shockleys in the US trace back to this Maryland immigrant.

Hi Vicki and thank you. Yes I am aware of many, perhaps a hundred with those same first names. Yes I am aware it traces to Maryland. Yes I am aware of the name discrepancy. This is why I need some help from the super duper Shockley expert(s).
OK....However...what I asked was for the expert on Shockley to stand up and help because that census has a non-conforming entry and I need to figure it out as my folks are related to those people.
My relationship ties into those who married with surnames Shockley and Rownd at that location and time frame. Rownd members lived in Indiana and later in Iowa and Nebraska. This is for sure.... no tricks, no gimmicks...no magic.
And the surname Rownd evolved into Round and Rounds. For sure. Yes I am related. Thanks!
If you don't know that is fine, but what I am asking I thought was pretty clear as being in reference to that specific census.
Thanks for trying and thanks for reading...

Well, in 1870, James Shockley (age 16) and Solomon Shockley (18) are in the same household as James, Sarah H, Clarissa, Christiana M. Lettila, Leonidas, and Lucetta Rounds in West Jersey Twp, Stark County (near Toulon PO). Presumably that means they're orphans.

James' probably father was John R. Rownd, and John's most likely parents were Jesse James Rownd and Tabitha Holloway. I wonder if your Tabitha Shockley was a sister to John R. Rownd? There's some Maryland marriage records out there someplace that might shed light on this question. If so, that would make James Rounds and James and Solomon Shockley cousins.

Of course, a James Round did marry Sarah Shockley 06/27/1845 in Knox County, IL, which makes them brothers-in-law....Would James have married his first cousin?

Ah, check out the James Chatfield post from 5 Jun 2000 7:28. Claims William N. Shockley's parents were Zilpha Noble and Elijah Shockley. Those are also the presumed parents of my Hannah Shockley, wife to my Joshua Rownd b. 1786.

BTW, some folks think that Joshua's paternal grandmother might also have been a Tabitha. A popular name 250 years ago...
