My 2nd great grandfather was James
Shockley Bates born 1810 in
Pendelton Dist SC [northwestern part of SC on the
GA line]. I don't think there is proof, but many charts list his parents as John
Bates and Elizabeth
Shockley. The only thing I have found is a deed selling one quarter acre of land on the
Savannah River [I think] for a ferry landing. It was sold to Thomas
Shockley of
Abbeville County SC. The
Shockley Ferry was later called Brown's
Ferry and next Alford's
Bridge. There is an apple named Shockley's Apple which found its name here.
Hart County,
GA, across the ferry landing is where my ancestor James
Shockley Bates married several of his 5 wives and lived for many years. If his mother is Elizabeth
Shockley, she would have been born about1790, the year Thomas
Shockley started his ferry. I know I am clutching at straws, but can anyone connect with Elizabeth
Shockley Bates? Thanks, Jeanne
