John Shockey 1775-1859

Classification: Query
Surnames: Shockey
John Shockey is supposed to be a son of Isaac, son of the immigrant John Christopher Shockey, according to published works. This has probably been gone over many times before, and probably resolved, so I apologize.

I believe John Shockey to be the son of Christopher Shockey, the counterfeiter, who was hung on 11 Dec 1779, that Christopher is the youngest son of the immigrant, and that he is not the same person usually called Christian Cristopher Shockey.

1. The Carter Co., KY death record of John Shockey names his parents Christopher and Rosah Shockey. If he really were a son of Isaac Shockey, who died in nearby Mason Co., KY, his family surely would have known.

2. John Shockey married Elizabeth Simpson in Montgomery Co., VA in 1803.

3. Mary Shokey (sic) married Jacob Smith in Montgomery Co., VA in 1796. The marriage record names her mother Rossanner Shilling.

4. The 1810 Census of Montgomery Co., VA has Rosannah Shilling and John Shockey in adjoining households.

5. The 1799 tax list of Montgomery Co., VA lists Rosamond Shilling who paid for one tithable.

6. Jacob Shilling married Rosannah Shockley in Franklin Co., VA in 1787.

7. Christopher Shockey enlisted in Col. Thomas Hartley's Additional Continental Regiment in 1777; Christian Shockey didn't join Hartley's regiment until it was redesignated the 11th Regiment.

8. Christopher Shockey's 1778 court martial records included statements that he had a brother Abraham, a wife and three small children, and was associated with counterfeiters. He was sentenced to death but pardoned by Washington. Christian Shockey's 1778 court martial records match the military service of the man who died in 1829; he was in a different regiment, and was sentenced to 100 lashes, which Washington let stand.

So far I have seen no documentary evidence linking Isaac (died 1801) with John (died 1859). There is, however, documentary and circumstantial evidence proving that Rosannah married a Shockey and had two children born in Maryland c1775 and c1776. Since Christopher had 3 young children in 1777, and there is at least one document identifying Rosannah as his wife, I think the conclusion that John Shockey (1775-1859) is the son of Christopher (died 1779) and Rosannah Shockey is sound.
