I have a Betty Shitler wwho married Charles Jarvis 7.4.1760 Tincleton DOR. They had 3 children Charles 1759, Elizabeth Jane & ?.
James apparently married again to Catherine Wallace 20.5.1770 at Tincleton, perhaps Betty died in childbirth?
Cheers
Pamay

John Shitler of Moreton, Dorset

I am trying to trace decendants of a John Shitler who married (Will)Anna Maria Plowman, daughter or the Rev John Plowman of Tolpuddle, on the 3rd of February 1756 at Tolpuddle. The IGI list the baptism of an Elizabeth Shitler, daughter of John and Willanna, at Tolpuddle on the 3rd Jan 1757.

The Will of the Rev John Plowman of Toller Porcorum, brother of Willanna, mentions in 1784 a "John Shitler the younger of Moreton aforesaid Gentleman ..." I am assuming at this stage that John the younger is the son of John & Willanna Shitler.

To the English speaking world in the 21st century the surname Shitler could appear slightly humorous. However, P H Reaney in his “A Dictionary of British Surnames” thinks the name stems from the Old English word for a weaver’s shuttle.
