Peter Shirer/Shirey 1815 Pennsylvania

I am looking for information that might help me to link my Peter Shirer/Shirey to an earlier part of the family. My first data for him is from Stark County Ohio where he is living in the late 1830's. He is a member of the local German reformed church where there are several records of him, wife Lydia Bennett, daughter Rachel and daughter Catharine. Family oral history indicates that he comes from a line of stone masons in Germany and he works as a mason during the latter part of his life. Early records seem to link him to the Shirer line but the name changes to Shirey in the mid 1800's. Thanks

Re: DeRyee and Atlee Families in Texas (Orig. Du Ry)

Cindy,

Did you see the record for Francis Atlee in my database? I have the following in the notes:

"Francis' parents were Der Yee Pitt Atlee and Idel Blackburn. They appear in the 1930 census in Houston as Debbyee P. Atlee and Ideele Atlee."

The names seem mangled but should give you enough info to trace them backwards. Francis' Texas Death Certificate gives her parents as D. P. Atlee and Idelle Blackburn. The 1910 census has them as DeRyce P. and Idelle Atlee and they are living with her parents, John F. and Fannie Blackburn and were married for three years and his father was born in TN and mother in TX.

Here is his death record:

Name: Deryee Pitt Atlee
Event Type: Death
Event Date: 16 Nov 1967
Event Place: Burnet, Burnet, Texas, United States
Gender: Male
Marital Status: Married
Birth Date: 17 Dec 1886
Birthplace: Laredo, Texas
Father's Name: B G Atlee
Mother's Name: Amanda Deryee
Certificate Number: 70486
GS Film number: 2138743
Digital Folder Number: 005144731
Image Number: 02065
Citing this Record: "Texas, Deaths, 1890-1976"
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/KSB9-45K : accessed 30 December 2014

Here is the death record for Amanda Deryee Atlee:

Name: Amanda J Atlee
Event Type: Death
Event Date: 08 Oct 1914
Event Place: San Antonio, Bexar, Texas, United States
Gender: Female
Marital Status: Married
Birth Date: 01 Apr 1856
Birthplace: , Alabama
Father's Name: Wm De Reyee
Mother's Name: Ida Nyluis
Certificate Number: 19797
GS Film number: 2051129
Digital Folder Number: 005145354
Image Number: 02839
Citing this Record: "Texas, Deaths, 1890-1976"
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/K37Y-NJQ : accessed 30 December 2014

I Can't find a death record for B. G Atlee but he is buried with Amanda in Mission Burial Park South in San Antonio. (1848-1933). He is listed as Dr. B.G. Atlee Sr.. His son, Dr. Benhart Gilbert Atlee, Jr. (1881-1906) is found buried in DeLeon cemetery in Comanche co., TX. It says he died in Mexico and perhaps the same may be true for his father which is why there is no Death Record in Texas.

Find them beyond that is going to take some work. There is a Gilbert Atlee (21) and wife Nora in Athens, TN in 1870 next door to what appears to be his mother, Delilah Atlee. In 1880, the E. A. Atlee (32, TN) in Loredo, TX has a 6 month old son named Gilbert.

What really nails it is the 1860 census in Athens, TN:

Edwin A. Atlee, 56, PA, Master Saddler
Delilah Atlee, 56, PA
Letitia Atlee, 18, TN
Mary Atlee, 16, TN
Edwin Atlee, 12, TN
Bernhart Atlee, 10, TN
Bernhart Gilbert Atlee Sr, 74, PA
Susannah Atlee, 74, PA

This would suggest the E.A. Atlee in Laredo is Bernhart's brother. It also include his grandfather who he is named after and his grandmother.

The 1930 census has the following:
Precinct 8, Bee, Texas, United States
Household	Role	Gender	Age	Birthplace
Bernard G Atlee	Head	M	81	Tennessee
Amanda E Atlee	Wife	F	45	Texas

That shows Amanda was not his first wife so that must have been the Nora shown in the earlier census.

And with this knowledge we can now find his death record:

Name: Benhardt Gilbert Atlee
Titles and Terms:
Event Type: Death
Event Date: 16 Jan 1933
Event Place: Bee, Texas
Gender:
Marital Status:
Certificate Number: 171
Citing this Record: "Texas, Death Index, 1903-2000"
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/VZDS-CVX : accessed 30 December 2014

This should give you a good start to pushing them back a few more generations. If you want more help, you know where to find me!

Denny

Just to keep every updated on where we are with our Shirer genealogy search:
I discovered a fount of data on Michael Shirer and Paul Shirer in the form of warrants and deeds and such. You can find it here:
http://www.archivesindex.sc.gov/onlinearchives/
The main problem I am having is trying to find all the variations of the name Shirer. I'm thinking that someone was transcribing it as Shiver now. There are surveys in Broad River for "Barbara Shiver." The location is the same area that Michael Shirer lived. Michael Shirer's wife was named Barbara.
Anyhoo...........that's where we are at the moment. If anyone has any clue about Michael and Paul's parents please feel free to reply to this post. Margaret Cox and I would appreciate it.
Betty Fox

Shirers in South Carolina

Greetings all,
My Shirah family connection begins in South Carolina. Recently I have teamed up with Margaret Shirer Cox in order to find out where my Shirer ancestors originated. Margaret lives in SC and is able to get her hands on dead tree data that is unavailable to me via the web.
Recently Margaret has discovered:
http://www.upamerica.org/roots/proceedings.htm
The ships Union, Dragon, and Planters Adventure took about 400 refugees from Gravesend, England on October 7, 1764. The ships Union and Dragon traveled for ten weeks and arrived in Charles Town on December 14th and 16th respectively. The Planters Adventure departed later and arrived on February 12th, 1765.

Here you will find a list of the persons on the ships.
http://www.upamerica.org/roots/rootsappC.html#Feb.%2027,%201...

Listed on the Planters Adventure is a Michael Sherer and a Paul Shawrer. Listed on Dragon is George Sherer aged forty. Catherine Sherer aged 20 arrived on Union and Anna Sherer aged 8 arrived on Dragon.
From this data Margaret looked for records in South Carolina. She found these pieces of information:
1) From A Compilation of the Original Lists of Protestant Immigrants to South Carolina 1763-1773, by Janie Revil, I found that an entry from February 27, 1765. " The following petitions of the German protestants addressed His Honor the Lieutenant Governor setting forth that they were safely arrived in the ship Dragon Captain Hammet and Planters Adventure Captain Lonley from London and humbly prayed to have Warrants of survey for the following tracts in Londonborough Township free of charge were presented and read VIZ" and Michael Sherer was to receive 100 acres.
2)In the Register of St. Philip's Parish, Charles Town or Charleston, SC 1754-1810, there was an entry for the burial of Michael Shirer on March 15, 1767 in the parish. Guess this is why there were only two children (Adam and Mary) baptized as his children. Wonder how Barbary supported herself and the children.

3) There is another land grant to Paul Shirer in 1768, so hopefully (if he was related as we suspect) he helped out with Michael's widow and children.

4) In the SC Magazine of Ancestral Research, vol 1, p. 150 & 214, on the records for St. Matthews 1818 tax list, Adam Shirah paid his taxes and signed for Paul Shirah.

5) John Adam and Mary Ann Shirer, my ggggranparents, were members of the St. Matthews Lutheran Church. In the Church Records of Saint Matthews Lutheran Church, Orangeburg County, SC and "the Red Church" by Anne Martin Haigler, the marriages recorded during the pastorate of Rev. J. P. Margart include Aaron Shirer to Mary Zeagler on July 24, 1842.
John Adam and Mary Anne later moved to Berkeley County.

Here is the information about Adam Shirer:
( From Shirer Family file at Calhoun County Museum, compiled by Nell P. Reid, attributed to a Bible in possession of C. J. Inabinet)

Adam Shirer born 1773, died August 1825, married Deborah Smith on June 12, 1808. Deborah was born in 1786 and died April 22, 1857.

Children:
1)	Sarah Ann born 3/27/1809
2)	Charles Paul born 3/6/1810, died 7/17/1866
3)	Adam born 11/6/1812
4)	Plena Ursula born October 1817, married Caspar Inabinet
5)	Aaron Thomas born 2/10/ 1819, died 5/2/1869
6)	Eleanor Catherine born 2/9/1824, died 1825
7)	Benjamin Franklin born 1/4/1826

So that is as far as we've gotten in regards to SC Shirers. Margaret is going to do some more digging in the archives and see how to reconcile the differences in birth records for Adam Shirer and Michael Shirer's death date. The C.J. Inabinet Bible shows that Adam was born in 1773 and the second record shows that Michael died in 1767. Margaret has found another record about Adam: ,( there is a record of an Adam Shirer, son of Michael and Barbary Shirer, being baptized on November 24, 1762,in the Register of St. Philip's Parish, Charles Town or Charleston, SC, 1754-1810)

So as you can see there are a few discrepancies but we believe the baptism record is more accurate than the Bible record. Sorry if this post is a little unorganized. I just wanted to get all the information in here in case anyone else can use it.
Betty Fox
felicity@foxinnovations.net

Forgive the long time I have taken to answering this... haven't been on Ancestry in a while. I was aware of your third great grandfather Aaron and his marriage to Mary Zeagler, but did not know anything of his descendents so would love to share more information with you. I have a lot of info back to John Adam and Mary Ann Jackson.
The Alice on the 1870 census was John Adam's daughter Alice Adelade, whose age was 20, not 70. Handwriting on census must have been hard to read. According to my information, she married Edward Atkinson of Clearmont, Sumter County, SC in 1875. (this was from family information, not anything I have documented.) Please email me at mcox1263@sc.rr.com so that we have fill each other in on our respective branches of the family.
Margaret Shirer Cox
I am also researching the Shirers in Orangeburg. My information shows that John Adam Shirer married to Mary Ann Jackson is the brother of my third great grandfather Aaron James Shirer married to Mary Zeagler 1841. I have found an elderly woman listed on the 1870 census with John Adam Shirer named Allice aged 70 born around 1800. I am still researching who her husband was.
Jacob Shirer is listed as having been granted property in Orangeburg around 1790 or so.
Hope this helps a little.
Get in touch with me if you want more help.
Betty Fox (Oregon)

Sorry for your loss Richard. The lack of records on her parents may indicate one or both may have died shortly after her birth. I'm guessing to find any real answers you are going to have to visit Dade county and look for her birth record and adoption record, her parents marriage, divorce, and or death records and perhaps newspaper articles from that time period. If you are unable to travel there, try contacting the Dade County Genealogy Society and ask if they can do some of the research for you or suggest someone who can be your research proxy.

Some of the answers may be in court records, both common pleas and probate and occasionally some documents, especially land records and death records may be at the Recorders office. Some counties combine the Clerk and Recorder so check online at the County's website to see how to inquire about those records. These searches may involve a fee but they are going to be a lot less than traveling expenses. Genealogy Societies usually only charge for materials but consider a donation especially if they get results.

Since you now have her parents names you can start looking for them in records in South Carolina and Alabama. I only did a cursory search and found nothing but you may try joining some of the mailing lists and reaching out to other researchers as you did on this board for more answers. I have not seen or run across many southern Shirer researchers, especially on the Shirer Boards and Mailing list which I admin but you may have more luck with the McKineys/McKinneys. Neither family seemed to be in Florida for long before Margaret was born so it is likely they met and married there but previous census records may find them in their home states.

Good luck on your quest. Feel free to post any results you find here.
In 1945 they were living at 1442 NW 61st St. They had no children.

Also in the 1945 State census a short ways away was the following family:

1945 FL ST Census Dade Co., Miami
2404 NW 60th St
McKiney, Lela, 53, Alabama
Shirer, Oland, 30 SC
Shirer Lucille, 21, Alabama
McKiney, Robert, 25, Alabama
Shirer, Margaret, 0, FL
Florida, State Census, 1945," index and images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-266-11684-10705-14?... : accessed 17 Sep 2013), Dade > 022, Miami

You did not specify anything about Margaret except her death in 2000 and I couldn't find a death record for her so I can't tell what surname she died with so I can't tell if this Margaret in the 1945 census is her or not. This Margaret appears to be the daughter of Oland Shirer and Lucille McKiney. I looked for Oland Shirer and this is the only record he is associated with so either this is his middle name or it is misspelled. The last name may not be Shirer but the southern Shirer line did originate in South Carolina so it seems likely it is correct. I looked for any Shirer born 1919-1920 in South Carolina in other records and found some possibles. There was a Coley Shirer born in Sumter, SC the same age. He had a brother named Ollie but he was older and I found an obit for Ollie and it does not mention Margaret so count him out but Coley may be a possibility. There was also a Clarence Shirer, 48, SC, in the 1945 census in Miami who I thought may be Oland's father but following him back he was single in previous census records. I wouldn't count him out as being related. I also could not find the McKineys which may also be spelled McKinney. I looked for each of those household members in previous census records and couldn't find anything. Birth, Death, Marriage and Divorce records also proved fruitless looking for these folk so this seems to be all I could find without actually going to Miami and looking at birth records there. At least this may give you more information then what you had. Wish I could have helped more.

Hi......Yes John did have a brother Lewis (Louis 1853 - 1923). The children I have listed for Lewis were Daisy, Lillie and Chauncy. Does this sound like your family? My first info on Peter is from Clark County, Ohio where he married Lydia Bennett.

Look forward to hearing back from you.

Noel

He listed his nearest relative in country of origin as his father Leib Scheiner.

March 23 was the date I thought it should be. Even though his gravestone is pretty worn, it is legible enough to show that they used the Convers spelling. The name is not a family name and I suppose he was named after Daniel Converse who oddly enough is also found with both spellings so I'm not sure which is correct. His military record lists him as Converse Shirer but he was buried by his parents and unless a mistake was made on the stone and they couldn't afford to get another, they must have used the spelling on the stone.

Re: John Shirer/Johannes Schurer

Tom,

Lewis is the son of Charles and Nina Shirer of Fayette Co., PA. Charles in turn was the son of Charles Shirer (1829-1879) He had two wives, Susan Thomas and Susan Barnes. I'm not sure of the order but it would seem Charles Jr. was the son of the second wife as he was the youngest, at least according to the 1870 census.

Charles Sr. was the son of John Shirer (1798-1862) and Solome Wagner. John was the son of Peter Shirer and Gertraut Derr of Salisbury, Somerset Co., PA. He was the son of John and Elizabeth Shirer. The line at that point goes no further. I have a theory John is the son of JOhan Augustus Scherer/Scheurer who came with a brother and uncle abord the Thistle in 1730. Augustus waffled between PA and MD finally settling in MD. not all of his children are identified and John was born a little over a year after Augustus was married so the timeline fits. Augustus, his uncle and brother were from Lachen-Speyerdorf, Palatinate. They are found in one of the emmigrant books of that area. The minister of the Lutheran church there indentified most of the congregation as being descended from Swiss refugees. John's family has an oral history that the family came from Switzerland which fits this family as well.

My Ancestor Valentine Scheurer was thought by many to be a brother to Peter Shirer but this is not true as Valentine is from Berks Co. John and Peter were always associated with Maryland and many of Peter's descendants moved back there.

I had done a lot of research on this family originally but that was mostly to prove or disprove their relationship and they now fall into the unrelated column so I no longer research them. You can however find some information on them in a separate database on my website. The following is a direct url to the record for Charles Shirer Sr. I do not have his children on there but the census records are very easy to find to tie him to your father.

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mysong/joh...

Scheurer DNA Project

Fellow Shirer and Scheurer researchers,
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have begun a DNA project through The Readers Digest Genographic Project and the Family Tree DNA Project. We are looking to collect DNA from Scheurer descendants, no matter what variant of the name, to help provide evidence as to where we came from and whether all the Scheurer lines are related.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Some of the common variations are Shirer, Shirar, Sheirer, Shirey, Shearer, Scherry, Sherry, and more.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Most of us know that the Scheurer surname is an occupational name, meaning that it's origin was a name given to a person or family based on the type of work they did. The common belief is that the name means "shearer" and was given initially to people who sheared sheep but was later given to anyone who then processed the wool such as weavers and tailors. An occupational name does not guarantee that two people with the same name are related. Consider the names Smith or Cooper.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Y Chromosone DNA results can help determine if a line has the same paternal roots. The test will work for both males and females but will give results only following the paternal line. The mtDNA test follows a maternal line. We are only interested in the Y testing. There are a few different test, actually the same test but some are more involved and will yield better results with more resulting markers. The initial test is available through the Readers Digest Genographic Project which can be found at:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
https://www3.nationalgeographic.com/genographic/
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Anyone who has already ordered this kit and received their results can through the provided links after log in, contribute your date to the associated FamilyTreeDNA project and join the Scheurer Project. You can also go straight to the FamilyTreeDNA Project and purchase a kit through them. More detailed kits increase in cost.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The link below will take you directly to the page where you can order a kit and join the Scheurer DNA Project.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.aspx?code=B35568
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The more Scheurer descendants that join the project, the better we will be able to map out our origins.

SHIRER Converse M.

CONVERSE M. SHIRER whose death at Porter's Hotel. Zanesville you noticed a few days ago, was a member of Captain Egan's company 97th regiment-not of the 122nd as you stated. He was a young man of correct habits, and enjoyed the confidence and esteem of a very large circle of friends and acquaintances. He was a consistent member of the Baptist church at Adamsville in this county, where he resided up to the time of his enlistment in the army of his country. Shortly after the battle at Perryville, Kentucky he was taken prisoner by Morgan's men and paroled, when he returned home enervated by disease contracted during the severe exposure to which his regiment was incident during their march through Kentucky into the slaughter pen of Buell and Bragg at Perryville, from which disease he never recovered, and which doubtless, was the remote cause of his death.
Among many acquaintances he leaves a good name, while we are not without hope that he has enetered upon the scenes of "a better country even an heavenly."
A funeral sermon will be preached by his pastor Rev. S. Siegfried, at Adamsville on Sabbath next, 29th inst. at 11 O'CLOCK, A.M.

FRIEND

The Courier, Zanesville, Ohio
p.2
Monday Evening March 23 or 28, 1863

Muskingun County, Ohio

Hi Noel... I am so happy to read your post. I think your GGP John is the brother to my Great Great Grandpa Lewis. Like you, I have seen other researchers work and am having trouble finding the documentation linking Peter with Lewis, not to mention finding anyone before Peter Shirey. I would love to correspond with you!! (maybe = cousin).

Kim

My 1/2 brother (same mother)is Charles Michael Shirer. His grandfather was Charles Michael Shirer, born 1864, died 1946, who had 13 children, one of whose name was George Shirer. I am adopted by Harold Ray Shirer, born 1917, died 1982, last child of Charles Michael Shirer. Harold Ray Shirer and his father, Charles Michael Shirer lived in Pennsylvania. I believe they lived in Uniontown. Harold was born in Isabella, PA. Don't know if this helps you. There is a Shirer/Thomas cemetery in PA. I can direct you there if you wish. Best regards,

Melvin L. Shirer
MelvinShirer@aol.com
Schurer,Schura, Shura

Information on a Millwright named Schurer who worked in the Hauge Mill in Slangerup, Denmark in 1855-1856. Schurer and Catrine Sundersun gave birth to a son on February 19, 1856. Their son was our Grandfather, and the name was changed several times for different reasons. The name went from Schurer to Schura to Skura (in landing in New York in 1889) then to Shura around around 1915. Perhaps the reason being it sounded German and that may not have been a popular name around that time.
