CONVERSE M. SHIRER whose death at Porter's Hotel. Zanesville you noticed a few days ago, was a member of Captain Egan's company 97th regiment-not of the 122nd as you stated. He was a young man of correct habits, and enjoyed the confidence and esteem of a very large circle of friends and acquaintances. He was a consistent member of the Baptist church at Adamsville in this county, where he resided up to the time of his enlistment in the army of his country. Shortly after the battle at Perryville, Kentucky he was taken prisoner by Morgan's men and paroled, when he returned home enervated by disease contracted during the severe exposure to which his regiment was incident during their march through Kentucky into the slaughter pen of Buell and Bragg at Perryville, from which disease he never recovered, and which doubtless, was the remote cause of his death.
Among many acquaintances he leaves a good name, while we are not without hope that he has enetered upon the scenes of "a better country even an heavenly."
A funeral sermon will be preached by his pastor Rev. S. Siegfried, at Adamsville on Sabbath next, 29th inst. at 11 O'CLOCK, A.M.

Lace,

Thanks for posting this. I didn't think there was an obit for Converse and family history has it he died at his parent's home in Adamsville. This clears that up!

The date the article appeared was March 23rd 1863 page two in The Courier. I re-checked.
I see his name also spelled Convers M. Shirer.

March 23 was the date I thought it should be. Even though his gravestone is pretty worn, it is legible enough to show that they used the Convers spelling. The name is not a family name and I suppose he was named after Daniel Converse who oddly enough is also found with both spellings so I'm not sure which is correct. His military record lists him as Converse Shirer but he was buried by his parents and unless a mistake was made on the stone and they couldn't afford to get another, they must have used the spelling on the stone.
