I have acquired some old newspapers and correspondence of a H. L. Griley who worked for Sun Oil Company in the 30's and 40's. I am curious as to who this man was. On one of the envelopes was written the name Mary Martha Griley, McKinley & Harrison Aves., Westwood. I traced this name to your Shirer web site. Can you help. Radford

Radford,

You didn't mention a locality where you are searching for the Grileys.

The Mary Martha Griley (b. ca 1915) you found in my database is the daughter of Russell Griley and Mildred Vera Hanks of Muskingum and Coshocton counties, Ohio. Mildred was the daughter of Samuel Titus Hanks and Mary Melinda Vinsel I have no information on Griley but his approximate date of birth in 1895. The Vincesls and Hanks are related to the Shirers but the Griley connection has no blood connection.

There was an F. Charles Griley family living in Zanesville in 1900 and he had a son, L Harold Griley b. 1898. I didn't find that family anywhere in the census after 1900 but the name could have been mispelled. A more thourough search of the census records would probably turn them up. There weren't that many Grileys and the bulk of them were in Ohio that I saw.

Where was the address you mentioned and what was the source of the article?

Mr. Shirer, thank you for your reply. The reason I am asking about this Mr. Griley is that a few years ago one of my former students noticed old newspapers (lots of them) at the recycling he manages here in Middle Tennessee and he called me. Being the pack rat history teacher that I am, I sent some students to gather them and bring them back to school. The newspapers and magazines cover a time period of the late 1930's through the late 1940's. The cover mostly war related subjects. Apparently mr. Griley worked for Sun Oil Company and had ties with Cincinnati. Ohio. The newspapers are from hotels that range from Nova Scotia, New York City, cities in Pennsylvania, and Tulsa, Oklahoma. In one newspaper I found neatly folded a pair of pajamas which still had the laundry ticket attached. My curiosity about Mr. Griley has increased these last few months. Any information I have will be freely given but now all these papers are stored in plastic container in my garage. Any information about Mr. H.L. Griley will be appreciated.
Yours, Radford Spivey
