I'm sure you have long since figured this out, but it is Samuel Shipler and Mary Ann Sisley. Samuel then connects back to Peter Shepler and Mary Hammond.

I am also looking for information on John w. shipler. I am directly related through his daughter, Anna belle. She married Henry John Wells. They are my great great grandparents. Has anyone reviewed Parker shippler's obituary in the Dayton daily journal? I am curious if that has anything that concretely ties them together.

Pegmwarren...I have a great deal of information on John W. Shipler. John W. is the head of the Missouri branch of the Shipler family and is the brother or half brother of James Elliott Shipler, head of the Kansas branch of the Shipler family and my 2nd great grand father.

What is your connection to the Shipler family? You seem to have information on the Gard's that I do not have. It sounds like sharing in in order.

Please contact me directly at leedon@bellsouth.net

I was trying to tie James Parker Shipler to John W Shipler but can not. I have a branch on James Parker Shipler but not attached. I have found alot of things on him. I found that his wife was Phebe Gard. They had two children that died very young. Phebe died in 1840 and is buried next to the children at Brookside cemetery in Butler co. Her parents are also listed. There is a picture of the headstone and it is from her husband James Parker Shipler and parents. Wish I could find something on John W Shipler.

Hi Linda, Samuel and Sarah's oldest son Lewis was my GG Grandfather. So it looks like we are distant cousins like you and Cindi. I have also talked to Cindi and just sent her what info I have gotten from our local library in Fairfield, Iowa. I live only a few miles from the Brethren cemetery.
I have pictures of some of the stones and am going back when spring comes. The Shiplers come from my Dad's side of the family and I am just not getting into this part of the family. My Grandmother Belvia Ann Shipler (Lewis' daughter) married William Edward Carter and their daughter Goldie Leah married Opal Fields. From that marrage came my Dad, Arnold, then me. From what I have in my records, Lewis and your Grandfather Mautren were brothers. I do not visit this message board very often, so if you could reply to me colleen@thaddeus.com, I would love to chat with you.
HI MIKE,

THE SHIPLER NAME WAS ON THE 1790 WESTMORELAND CO.,PA. CENSUS JOHN SHIPLER,MATHIAS SHIPLER,PETER SHIPLER( MY GGGG-GRANDFATHER)PHILIP(CALEB)SHIPLER,THEN MATHIAS'S SON JOHN SHIPLER AND PETER'S SON JOHN SHIPLER(MY GGG-GRNADFATHER). THE NAME TOOK A SHIFT TO SHEPLER AND SHEPLAR. I CAN CONNECT NAMES WITH ALL SPELLING TO SAME LINE.THE FIRST JOHN IS BELIEVED TO BE THE FATHER OF THE 3 SONS,MATHIAS,PETER AND PHILIP. THE SHIFTS CAME BECAUSE MOST OF THESE FOLKS COULD NOT READ OR WRITE. SO THE ENGLISH SPEAKING FOLKS SPELLED THEM AS THEY THOUGHT WAS CORRECT.SO WHENEVER THOSE FAMILY MEMBERS BEGAN TO READ AND WRITE WHAT SOMEONE SHOWED THEM AS THE SPELLING SEEMED TO STICK. IT IS REALLY THOUGHT THAT THE NAMES WERE SPELLED SCHEPPELER,SCHEPPLER,SCHEPLER,SCHAUPLER SO TAKE YOUR PICK.
GOT YOUR MESSAGE. WILL TAKE A LOOK AT.

Looking for information on James Parker Shipler born about 1807.
Do not know his wife's name or date of marriage. Do not know what unit.
His son, James Elliott Shipler, who was raised by a Samuel Carr (information unknown)also joined an Ohio Infantry unit in 1864 at age 18.James Elliott is my Great grandfather. I have information on his wife and children, but can not prove connection to Parker and can not get the Shipler line any further back.
If anyone can help please give me an email.
Hey Diane..
I have no idea if there is a connection or not.
I have hit a stone wall in my Shipler research at my 3rd great grandfather who I believe was James Parker Shipler of Ohio.
Parker's son was James Elliot Shipler (I have info on James' children, but no info on Parker.
I recently found info on Parker's Civil War service which will allow me to send for his service record. With that, maybe I'll have a lead.
Parker is listed in the 1860 Butler Co., Ohio census, but I have not been able to find a copy in my area to see what info may be listed.
Does any of this sound familiar to you??
Mike

Shipler's

War records might help--wife or children's names may be on them. Ever hear anything about any sisters? or other places your Shipler people lived? Near Dutch/German border has been dubbed "Saxony" but so have other parts of Germany--maybe this is where Carolina came from?! Her husband's family was from area near there so dialect may have been same--similar culture, etc. Ever see names such as Boeckmann or Melk in family? Anything ever addressed to places such as Cincinnati--or Mt. Adams or SweetWine (near Coney Island on Ohio River)? A picture of Carolina's husband has survived in his police uniform so that might be something else to look for if you have stuff around. Any thoughts?
shipler--English or German?

Any idea whether your people were of English or German heritage? Carolina was from Saxony of Germany, I believe. When she married in mid 1860's she still used the German spelling of the name. She lived in the county just south of Butler County.

carolina shipler

Carolina (originally spelled Schople with an umlaut over the "o") immigrated to America in 1857 from Saxony at age 14. She had, at least, one sister, Elizabeth. On marriage record, name spelled "Schople" but by death in early 1900's "Shipler". She married in Cincinnati in mid-1860's and raised her family there. Any connection?

German Shipler's

Hey Diane..
Oral family history says the family is from Germany near the Dutch/German
border. At this point I have no other idea. Again oral
family history says 2 brothers came over from the old country, but
I have been unable to prove or disprove at this point.I recently found Parker
and James Elloitt's Civil War units. Parker enlisted in the 69th Ohio Infantry in
1861 and James Elloit in the 13th Ohio Cav. in 1864. I will be sending off for their service
records soon..hopefully the record will have additional info.
Also, James Elliott was raised by a Samuel Carr which may indicate that Parker's wife may
have died and may have been a Carr. But who knows at this point.
With Carolina located this close, maybe a connection somewhere.
Mike

Hey Diane..
None of the names you mention are familiar or the locations.
I have been researching the Shipler family for a while with out much luck.
There is a group in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New York,Kansas, Utah and Montana,
However, I have never been able to connect them up.
By the way, my email is leedon@bellsouth.net, it might make it easier to contact me direct.
Please give me an email and tell me a little about yourself and your Shipler search.
Mike

James E. Shepler

Hey Fred..
By my records, your 'unlinked' James E. Shepler is
James Elliott Shipler, my great grandfather. The birth dates match!
I do not know the county of his birth, but his father was in the 1850 Butler Co., Ohio census,
so a match is probable. The information I have is from his family bible.
He married Millie Jane Slyter 31 Dec. 1869 in Wabash Co., Indiana. They had 6 children:
John Edward Shipler b 1 jan 1871 IN, d 12 Apr 1948 Sylvia, KS
Ray Leighton Shipler b 4 aug 1872 in ?, d 10 feb 1936 El Centro, CA
Robert Barkley Shipler b 5 oct 1875 in ?, d 8 jan 1880 Frederick Samuel Carr Shipler b 11 aug 1878 in ?, d 22 dec 1922 Tucumcari, NM
William Clyde Shipler b 27 jun 1880 in ?, d 21 apr 1954 Denver, CO
Cassie Maude Shipler b 7 oct 1885 in Rice Co., KS, d 11 apr 1960 Sterling, KS

James Elliott Shipler died 5 nov 1922 in Raymond, Rice Co., KS
His father is believed to be James Parker Shipler- mother may be Phebe Gard with marriage
of mother and father in 1833 in Wisconsin according to LDS information. At this point, I have no proof.
I do however, have considerable information on the Slyter family and
James Elliott's children.
What is your connection to James Elliott?? This is the apparent first confirmation of the possibility of a
surname spelling shift. Where did your information come from?? And what other Shipler/Shepler names or
information do you have?
Anxiously waiting to hear..Mike

James Elliot Shipler (1847-1922)

According to oral family history, James Elliot Shipler (1847-1922), son of James Parker Shipler (born abt. 1087), was raised by a Samuel Carr in either Indiana or Ohio. There is some confirmation of this by one of James Elliott's children being named Samuel Carr Shipler.
If anyone can shed some light on this or infromation on Samuel Carr and his family would be most helpful. Wolud like to find out what happened to Parker's wife and how James Elliott came to be raised by Samuel Carr.
Also any information about Parker or Samuel Carr's family. I suspect that one of Samuel Carr's daughters was Parker's wife, but who knows?
Please email me with any information. James Elliot Shipler is my Great grandfather and I'm at a 'brick wall' in research.
