It appears there are only a few Shiel family names, but I've found several in the censuses and am trying to put the family together.
My great great grandmother is Margaret Shiel, born 2 Jun 1854 in Oxford, OH, and died 20 Dec 1917 in Lake County, IL, USA. I found her in the 1860 census with parents:
James, HH, b. about 1827, Ireland
Margaret, wife, b. about 1833, Ireland
Bridget, daugh, b. 1857, Ohio
James S. son, b. Jan 1860 Ohio
Through obituaries, I discovered she had at least 2 other siblings, Catherine born Feb 1864 and John born about 1864. John was found in 1870 census living in Lake County, Illinois. All these children born in Oxford, OH, USA.
The family split up after the birth of Catherine and/or John before 1870. After 1870, the parents cannot be found together. I found a possibility for the father as a miner in 1870 with no family, never found the mother (I'm thinking she died, possibly in child birth), and found Bridget living in Indiana, USA (and later married to Hugh J. Scully of Indiana), and found Catherine living in Colorado married to Thomas O'Mahoney who was born in Indiana.
GG Grandmother Margaret Shiel married Edward Francis Moran Jan 1, 1873 in Waukegan, Lake County, Illinois. They had 12 children including 1 set of twins. The childrens' names were:
John James (had 2 boys, 2 girls)
Katherine Honora (had 3 girls, 1 boy)
Margaret Theresa (married, no children)
Edward Francis (had 1 child, boy)
Leo Joseph (died, aged 4 yrs)
Mary F. (married, no children)
William Dominick (married, no children)
Agnes (Nun, Sister Mary Clarita)
Joseph Leo (twin, my grandfather) (had 2 girls)
Thomas Hugh (twin) (married, no children)
Richard (no marriage, no children)
Loretta K. (had 1 girl)
I found in Lake County, IL, 1880, the family of Francis Shiel, widower, b. 1816, Ireland, with children Michael (27), Patrick (25), Margaret (22), Thomas (20), and William (17) all born in Illinois. I cannot connect them to my Shiel family, but possibly a sibling of my James Shiel, b. 1827 Ireland.
I'm hoping to find a connection to other family related Shiel people! This board doesn't have many posts, therefore I'm not very hopeful of a response, but would be quite happy if I did!
