Re: Sherer Surname

Kim - Other than William, do you know or do you have access to someone who would know he other siblings and the parents of Edward Sherer/Shearer (who married Elizabeth Buzzard). I believe Edward, and his brother William, to be younger brothers of my ggg-grandfather John Sherer. Here is his bio.

Sherer, John - biography

JOHN SHERER, deceased, was born in the State of Pennsylvania, in 1801. In 1805 his parents removed to Holmes County, Ohio, where he grew to manhood, and was there married to Miss Sarah Sills.

In the spring of 1849 he emigrated with his family to what was then the Far West, locating in Osceola, Clarke County, Iowa, where he remained till the spring of 1863, being the pioneer hotel keeper of that place. In April, 1863, he started with his family across the plains for California, arriving in Santa Cruz about the end of September, where he resided till he met with his death, January 2, 1864. The following notice in regard to the death of our subject was written for the Santa Cruz Sentinel.

Editor Sentinel:
A terrible accident occurred in our town on the 2nd inst. John Sherer, a resident of this town was thrown from his wagon and instantly killed. He was descending the hill in front of the Fountain House, when his team, four mules, became frightened and ran. It is supposed that he attempted to put his foot upon the brake, missing which he was thrown from his wagon upon his head, the wagon immediately passing over him. Every assistance possible was rendered him, but without avail. He was dead.

He arrived in Santa Cruz the last of September, 1863, where he has since resided, securing the respect and esteem of all who knew him. Wherever he has lived long enough to become known and appreciated, he has won the confidence of the community and the love of a large circle of friends. In Ohio, for sixteen years, and in Iowa for several years he held the office of justice of the peace. For the last twenty-eight years he and his wife were consistent members of the Methodist Episcopal church, in which he for several years, both in Ohio and Iowa, held the responsible position of class-leader, for which he was eminently fitted. For the last ten years he has been a member of the Masonic fraternity. In all relations of life, whether as magistrate, citizen, neighbor, friend, husband or father, he was a living illustration of the beauty, simplicity, excellence and practical utility of the principles of the religion he professed.
None knew him but to love him, None named him but to praise.

But the Supreme Ruler of the universe has called him from his labors on earth to mansions of rest. The righteous have hope in their death. It is well with our brother. He leaves a large circle of friends both here and in Iowa to mourn his loss; a wife who has been the partner of his joys and sorrows for over forty-one years, and several children and grandchildren.

He was this day buried by the Santa Cruz Lodge, No. 38, F. and A. M., of which he was a member. The Rev. Walter Frear preached an appropriate sermon from the words: Let me die the death of the righteous, and let my last end be like his, after which the lodge passed the following resolutions;

WHEREAS, It has pleased the Supreme Grand Master of the universe in His infinite wisdom, to summon from the labors and cares of earth our venerable brother, John Sherer, therefore,

Resolved, That in the death of brother Sherer, whose pure and simple honesty of life endeared him to all who knew him, this lodge has lost one of its most worthy members, the fraternity a just and upright brother, society an honest and industrious citizen, and his family a kind husband and father.

Resolved, That we tender to the bereaved family of our deceased brother, our heartfelt sympathy in their heavy affliction, and our assurance of our fraternal regard for those who were dearest to him in life.

Resolved, That we tender to the choir our thanks for their efficient assistance in the last sad rites of sepulture to our departed brother.

Resolved, That these resolutions be entered upon the minutes of this lodge, and that a copy thereof be furnished to the family of our deceased brother, and that they be published in the papers of the county.
D. W. Scoville, Secretary.
Santa Cruz, January 4, 1864.

NOTE: D. W. Scoville was an Attorney in Osceola, Iowa and Santa Cruz, CA, a State Representative for Clarke County Iowa, friend of and moved to California with John and Sarah Sills- Shearer.
Dutchess County New York Sherow - Sherer

Where to start...a prepared genealogy of the Sherow family of Dutchess county....according to the genealogy...

It begins with a George Sherer and his French Huguenot wife arriving in America in the middle to early 1700's.

He has two sons George Sherer and Benjamin Sherow the Elder 1767-1865

Only Benjamin's descendents are listed, however of the 8 children half decide at some point to use the Sherer name again and switch back. To make matters worse, their names (3 Georges of course!)are seemingly the same as what appears to be the descendents of George Sherer the Younger above.

I've pretty solidly tracked Benjamins descendents despite the name changes, but I've been unable to locate these two George Sherer's of the 1700's and their descendents...I'd like to do that if for any reasons than to help determine who is who between the Sherow-Sherers and what I believe to be the Sherer-Sherrers.

So, anyone have a George the Elder arriving from Scotland, maybe even with one child?

Contact me here or at MisterRelative@gmail.com - Thanks

When she passed in 1997 she died in Birmingham Alabama, her husband Junior, born in 1926, may still be living.
Franklin M. Sherer, Rockland, Maine

I have no connection to this family. This is from the April 2, 1938 issue of the Rockland (Maine) Courier-Gazette:

“FRANKLIN M. SHERER – Well known to the public because of the positions he had filled during his active years. Franklin M. Sherer passed on Wednesday morning at his home, 26 Spruce street, aged 68 years. A year ago he underwent a surgical operation at Knox Hospital, but disease had undermined his stalwart frame and the man who had once been the pride of the Rockland police force wasted gradually away. Hope dwelt eternal with him, however, and he was looking forward to the day when he would again be on the street.

Mr. Sherer was born in this city April 2, 1871, son of Josiah and Mary (Mereen) Sherer. He attended the public schools, and then worked for some years in the limerock quarries.

Entering the employ of the Rockland, Thomaston & Camden Street Railway he was assigned most of the time to the company’s Thomaston to Maverick Square line. He helped build the Thomaston extension of the Street Railway, and assisted in putting in the Thomaston street lighting system. When he joined the Rockland police department, which he served for quite a number of years as a regular and special, he was ‘the baby of the force,’ weighing 190 pounds. He served without fear or favor, and violators of the law quickly learned to respect him.

Mr. Sherer also served for a time as janitor of the federal building.

He was a member of Anderson Camp, S. of U.V. and the Masonic fraternity.

He is survived by his wife, a brother, Reuben, in California; and a sister, Caroline Sherer Swett of this city.”
Frances (Butler) Sherer, Rockland, Maine

I have no connection to this family. This is from the March 31, 2010 issue of the Rockland (Maine) Courier-Gazette:

“Frances Sherer, 105, Taught in Benner Hill Schoolhouse

Frances (Butler) Sherer, 105, wife of the late Dana Sherer, died March 25, 1991, at a local nursing home.

Born in Rockland Aug. 24, 1885, she was a daughter of Alden Bradford and Lizzie (Young) Butler.

Mrs. Sherer graduated as the valedictorian of Rockland High School in 1904. She entered Farmington State Normal School and graduated from the elementary division in 1906.

She taught for one year at the Warren Elementary School, then returned to Rockland, teaching in local schools until 1915.

In an interview with The Courier-Gazette on her 104th birthday, she recalled her first teaching job in Rockland at the one-room Benner Hill Schoolhouse with a class of 13. ‘It sounds hard now, when you talk about it, but it didn’t then,’ she recalled. She believed in teaching by example, saying, ‘A teacher is supposed to ‘show’ what the method (for learning) is: you can’t teach them anything much if you don’t believe it.’

In 1915, she returned to Farmington State Normal School, where she trained with the Home Economics group, graduating in 1916. That fall, she established a home economics class at Coburn Classical Institute in Waterville, where she taught until 1928. Mrs. Sherer and her husband were married in 1928 and made their home in Rockville until Mr. Sherer’s death.

She was a 92-year member and the oldest living member, of the First Baptist Church of Rockland, having joined in 1899. She became a deaconess, and was active both in church and community activities.

Surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held 6-8 p.m. Thursday (today) at Burpee-Strong Funeral Home, Rockland. A funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church, with Rev. Russell H. Bailey officiating. Burial will follow the ceremony.”

Would very much like to compare our findings on the family of John W. SHERER and his wife, Rebecca GALLAGHER. Am hopeful that you might have information on their daughter, Fannie J., b 1884, White Co., AR, who alledgedly married J. A. DONNELL.
I am looking for any information on the parents of Alletha Elizabeth Sherer (b. abt. 1835-d. abt 1895 in Chambers County, Alabama.)She married Elijah K. Corley in Troup County, Georgia in 1851-lived in Talbot County, Georgia until 1869-lived in Mitchell County, Georgia until abt 1877-79-lived in Opelika, Lee County, Alabama in 1880 & in Waverly, Chambers County, Alabama from late 1880's until her death. Elijah Corley (her husband) was killed accidentally in Camilla, Georgia in 1876 and she moved to Lee County, Alabama for some reason. I assume relatives lived there, but not sure if it was Sherer's or Corley's.
I do not know who her parents were, other than Sherer.

Matthew Shearer is as far back as any of us can go until it can be determined if any parish registers still exist in Armagh from around his time. If so we may---I repeat MAY be able to find more IF he is listed. But only the gentry were recorded faithfully in those during that time. If our Shearer's were like their descendants...it's doubtful.

I have been researching this family for years and would love to compare notes.

My husband is descended from Elizabeth Ann Kirkpatrick b.1821 who married Elisha Sherer. Elizabeth is the daughter of Joseph H. Kirkpatrick whose parents were John Kirkpatrick and Elizabeth Craig.

I would love to compare notes on this line and further my Craig research also. All I know about Elizabeth Craig is that her father may have been named George and she was said to have been born in Chester District, SC in or about 1750.

Any help from there would be great and I will gladly help you with the Sherer side. Contact me directly at: <a href="http://www.bootsgrandma@yahoo.com" target="_blank">www.bootsgrandma@yahoo.com
Hi!

Boy did you step on a hornet's nest!!!

I have been researching this family for years and would love to compare notes.

My husband is descended from Elizabeth Ann b.1821 who married Elisha Sherer.

I recommend the following items of research also:

AMERICAN KIRKPATRICK FAMILY 1754-1972 by D.M. Kirkpatrick 2817 N. Clarence, Wichita, KS 67204 (Manuscript found in the Heritage Room of the Huntsville Public Library, Huntsville, AL. A Xerox copy is in my possession.)

CAROLINA SHEARER-SHERERS AND OTHERS compiled by Iva LaRou Sherer c.1978. (Copy found at the Jasper-Walker County-Public Library, Jasper, AL.)

Both are excellent sources of data and are quite accurate in their data.

Two of the Kirkpatrick-Sherer daughters are buried in New Prospect Cemetery in Jasper (Elizabeth & Harriet). The other two (Jennet Rosannah & Jane) are buried in Old City Cemetery in downtown Jasper. The other two Kirkpatrick daughters (Mary & Margaret) I do not have record of their burial places.

Their parents Joseph & Elizabeth Rainey Kirkpatrick are buried in Bullock Creek Presbyterian Cem, Near York, SC.

I have more. Write soon. Served as a soldier three years in the civil war, was honorably discharged and mustered out with his company at Chattanooga, Tennessee.
The spirit of adventure led him to the Indian country and he spent many years among the Indians and working for the government at Ft. He helped locate the county seats of the counties in the Cheyenne and Arapaho country.
At the time of settlement of Garfield county he made the race and settled in Enid, September 16th, 1893. Later in 1901 he came to Grady county, filed on a homestead 5 miles southwest of Minco, where he and his family lived until January 1922 when they moved to Minco.
In his younger days he was a member of the Presbyterian church. A few days before he died he said he had made peace with God and was not afraid to die. He quietly passed over the river of death at 11:15 A.M. September 24, 1923.
He was married to Maggie May Howenstine of Enid on May 23, 1896 at Pond Creek, Okla.
He leaves his widow and children, Mrs. Pearl Law and Joe A. Sherer both of Minco and one granddaughter, Juanita Mae Law, also one sister of Waynesfield, Ohio.
The funeral services were held at the Baptist church in this city Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock. I only have info on their third child, Macre Ann, and would appreciate getting any information you might be able to share with me.

I WILL NOT post any info online, since I am doing this for myself, and my immediate family.

You can email me at rootsdigr@yahoo.com, rather than posting here.

Thanks for the reply!

Ron in Iowa
