Hello Nicole, my name is Amy Sharber Witty. I am Jack (Thelbert) sharber 's grandaughter. There are still sharbers in Christian county. We live just outside of crofton, an area called bluff springs. Our property joins the old home place, and the sharber cemetery is still here. My grandpa and dad were in fact tobacco farmers, and there have been many horses in our family. There aren't many of our bloodline left here on the homestead, just my dad, Randy, and my sister, Lori. My sister and I have built homes here and are raising our children here. I hope this message finds you well. Merry Christmas

From my research on the Fitzgerald family, I am convinced that Catherine Roberta Fitzgerald's parents were Jackson Jasper Fitzgerald and Frances Caroline Harris. They were married in Anderson County, Texas on 20 NOV 1854. Jackson was born 31 DEC 1831 in Maury Co., Tennessee and it appears he died sometime before 1880 in Texas. He was the son of Jackson Fitzgerald (1795 - 1882) and Sarah Moore (1795 - 1840).

This is a line that I have researched for my daughters line.
I don't know who John E Sharber's parents are yet.
One of the brothers went to Oklahoma I believe....I haven't been able to prove it 100% because there was no obit submitted...I didn't order a death cert for him...but I believe it is Jeremiah that is in OK.
Catherine remarried a Burrow. They had alot of children as well. I don't have my external hard drive plugged in to bring up my family program right now to look at it more. But I have photos of Catherine and Burrow husband with all their children, including the Sharber boys.
If you want to email me directly my email is knightchow@grandecom.net or knightchow@gmail.com
Michelle White

OK, I have a little more to go on. I found that John Edward Sharber's father is John E Sharber (about 1851 to 1883), born in Ft Bend Texas, living in Grayson Texas in 1880, married to Catherine Roberta Fitzgerald (1859-1937). John Edward had brothers Jasper and Jeremiah.

I don't know what the E stands for...could be Ellis. I haven't found John E Sharber's parents. Do you have any idea who they could be?

I'm sorry, but I know very little. I'm only going from what's written on my grandfather's tombstone. It says "Son of Fanny and John Edward". Fanny was born in 1888 (from her tombstone) and John was born in 1884. I don't even have a maiden name or day/month of birth.
On a quick look, our John E Sharbers have middle name of Ellis. I have not found a middle name of Edward. Are you certain the E is Edward? I have a great deal of information on our line. A couple of Sharber families and Dooley families moved from Tennessee just after the war and settled in North Texas near Denton. It would certainly be reasonable that one or more of them moved into Oklahoma. John was also the most common name for sons in both the Sharber and dooley families.

If you know wives or in-laws, I can probably check further for you.

Libby Graves -- libbygraves@gmail.com
My grandfather's father's name was John Edward Sharber and he may have come from Tennessee, but I'm not sure. All the Sharbers that I know are in Oklahoma. If you have any information as to whether this is the same J E Sharber, I'd appreciate knowing.

More about Megan SHARBER

Since posting the previous, I have found more information. Megan Diane Sharber was born August 5, 1982 in Bexar County, Texas. Her parents were John Kenneth Sharber and his wife Andrea Veit Sharber. They already had a son, Paul Brandon Sharber, also born in Bexar County. John and Andrea divorced in 1984, and it is possible that Andrea remarried. It is also possible that the entire family has left Texas.

I have reason to believe that Megan is an adopted child, born to my sister and a man I know absolutely nothing about. The only real clues I have to go on is the name, Megan Diane Sharber, and the date of birth, which was written down by my sister before she died of breast cancer in February of 2002, and was discovered among her belongings after her death. My sister's child was adopted through Lutheran Social Services in San Antonio.

Not only would I like to warn Megan of a possible unfortunate health legacy, but my 70-year-old mother would very much like to know what became of her. And it may be that Megan is out there, searching for her birth family.

Any leads would be helpful.

Re: Logan Gehu Sharber

Jehu Sharbrough was one of the sons of Jonathan Sharbrough, who passed away in 1765 in NC. Jehu's brother, Joseph, is my ancestor. Jehu had four sons, who changed the spelling of their names to Sharber, sometime around 1810. Two stayed in Pasquotank Co, NC, and one went to TN and one to KY.

Many Sharbers still live and farm within a few miles of the land tended by Joseph and Jehu, their father Jonathan, and their sons.

The name Jehu has been passed down as Gehu, Gehue, and Jehue. Most of the old records which say Jehu are transcribed in indexes and on the internet (including the 1790 census) as John. It's an easy mistake to make if you don't suspect that you're seeing an unusual name.

It appears that I'm a couple of years late answering this question.

My son, Zach Sharber, was in contact through this forum a in 2001. He was looking to find information about his background. My dad was Paul Freeman Sharber. He was the son of John Edward Sharber and Irene Sharber (maiden name Reynolds). He was born in Maryville in Blount County in 1930. This, because of divorce, death and moving, is all I really know about our Sharber roots. I remember my Grandmother talking about Grandpa (who I never met), and saying things about that honory old German. So I always assumed he was 1st generation immigrant. I think I found his social security number, and it showed that he died in western Tennessee. I would certainly be obliged if anyone has any information further than this.

Sharber's in Kentucky

Hi,
My name is Nicole and I am the great granddaughter of Rose and Lonnie Sharber. They were from Christian County. Their daughter was Virginia Sharber. I know there is a Sharber cemetery that was on my great grand parents land. My granma said they would keep it up. I'm looking for anyone with info. on this set of Sharbers. I also know that they grew tabacco and were very into horses. The original house was torn down and the land was mined for coal about 30-40 years ago, but my grandma tells me there was a fence put around the cemetary and no bodies were moved. If any of this sounds familiar, let me hear from you.

Virginia - North Carolina - TN (Sharbo to Sharber family heritage)

I am a descendant of John Ellis Sharber, whose family moved to the middle Tennessee area in the early 1800s. I currently live in Chattanooga and have an alternative theory for our lineage, one that might link our past more directly to the British isles than Germany.

Here is the line of male ancestors that I have been able to trace:

John Ellis Sharber (b. 1793 in North Carolina)
John Sharbo (b. 1775 NC)
Jonathan Sharbo (b. 1733 NC)
Thomas Sharbro (b. 1700)

There is also evidence that Sharbros lived in Virginia during the 1600s and moved to the Piedmont area of North Carolina in the latter parts of that century.

For several reasons, I believe that this particular Sharber family tree's most direct line traces back to Irish, English, and Scottish roots.

First, in death records and wills left by our ancestors, we see that these communities were almost entirely comprised of people of British descent. It seems more likely that Sharbros follow suit because of the company that they kept.

Second, the Sharbro name is remarkably similar to the English family Scarborough, of the same stock as the Bacon's rebellion Scarborough. I have even found some Sharboroughs in their family tree. It seems very likely that Sharbro is a variation of this name.

It does seem clear that at least some of the Sharber families in the United States today descended directly from Germany. These relatives arrived at Sharber as a variant of the German word Scharber. I believe that this disproves our original German connection because our name evolved into Sharber from a name that looked drastically different, Sharborough, Sharbro, Sharbo. Many of the German Sharber families originated as Scharbers and dropped the c somewhere along the line.

Lastly, the anglo saxon word scaer is the root for the Scarborough surname. There is evidence that this is the root for names like Sharpe, Sharper, Sharpless, Scarborough, and others. It seems likely that our Sharbro is a variation of the Scarbro spelling in early colonial Virginia. These conclusions seem especially likely because of the -bro and -borough endings, which were common throughout England. The -borough ending is of old english origin. This argument is not completely foolproof because the -burg ending of the same origin was a common German variant.

Anyway, the beauty of being an American for so many generations is the complex nature of our ancestral background. We no doubt have plenty of German, English, Irish, and Scottish blood from all the years in North America. I'd love to hear anyone's ideas about this theory.
