Dear Bob,
I just came across some information that will be of help to you. The story Trevor told you about the Civil War is true in a sense. There was a family feud about the time of the war which split the family. The family had migrated, in the most part to the area along the Kentucky/Tennessee border. When the war broke out, like many families, there was great division concerning loyalties. When the family split, the northern faction took the new spelling, Shackleford and the southern kept the original (English) version of Shackelford. This information is based on "family lore", so it's accuracy maybe in question. However, according to English records there are several acceptible spellings including: Shackelford, Shackleford, Sheckelford, Shackelton, Shackle, and Sheckleton, all of which appear in public record. For a history of the surname SHACKELFORD in England you may contact Swyrich Corporation at

I hope this helps.
Thanks,
Dan
