Looking for information on an artist, last name Sgambati.

He painted the panels behind the main altar of St. Mary of the Eternal Church and also a ceiling panel, in 1937-39.

Church was located in Philadelphia at 22nd and Clearfield St.

I recently acquired a painting by him "On the road to Emmaus"

If you know of him or family, please advise.

Dear Mario:

The artist you refer to was my father. I am one of four daughters and live near Philadelphia. His first name, ironically, was also Mario.

Please contact me at the above email address.

Best regards,

Maria

Hello Maria, nice to hear from you. I do know that your father's name was Mario. do you know Msgr. John Busco, who was the pastor of St. Mary of the Eternal?

The paintings, by your father, were behinf the main altar.

As I mentioned I have either a small version or "prototype" painting of one the large version in the church. It is one where Christ is breaking bread with the 2 disciples in Emaeus.

I'd like to hear from you. Email directly to me

Where do you live now?

I am in Plymouth Meeting, Pa.

M. Amici:

I was a member of St. Mary of the Eternal.
I worked and studied under Mario Sgambati for seven years.
Father Lou Giorgi and I took the paintings off the sanctuary walls many years ago, shortly after the church closed.

Hello, that's good to hear. We though the new owners painted over the paintings. The ceiling painting is still there - last time I was in the church.

I do have a small painting by Sgambati that Msgr. Busco gave me. I though he said it was a part of one of the large paintings.

Where are the paintings now?

Where did you live in the neighborhood?

Do you get the Judson Journal? An article about those paintings would be interested.

My number is 215 699 9200.

Maria, hello.
Today I received a message from someone name UTTI who said he and Father Giorgi had removed the paintings your father created in St. Mary of the Eternal church. I asked him where they are now. If he responds, I will contact you. Maybe you want some of them. If you recall, I have a painting your father created and it could be a part of one from the church. Msgr. Busco gave it to me.

Maybe you know this.

Hello Maria, recall we "spoke" a while ago about your father.

Last week Emanuel Utti told me that the paintings behind the main altar in St. Mary of the Eternal church were removed by Father Giorgi (deceased) when the church was closed. Subsequently the canvases were brought to St. Justin church in Penn Valley. I called there and the church historian didn't know anything but was going to get me the name of Fr. Giorgi's sister

Did you know that this is the case and did you receive any of the paintings?

Mr. Utti said he knew you.

Hello Maria,

This is Mario Amici from St. mary of the Eternal parish.

Recall I wrote to you about your father.

Today I received an email informing me that the ceiling painting was removed and sent to an auction house in Scottsdale Arizona. I thought it was al fresco and could not be removed. The email mentions the daughters of mario and to contact them for information.

do you know anything about this auction. i want to know so i can put a note in our Judson Journal (the old neighborhood newsletter) and also to tell Monsignor Busoc who would be interested. I do have a section of one the painting from behind the main altar.

Maria, if you get this message, please let me know about this situation.
