I am researching this family:
Christopher Columbus Clements family, Stewart and Jackson County TN. I have found many references to this family, such as the 1850 Jackson County Census:
Christopher and wife Anna (Polly Fraim)
Sons: Leroy Settle Clements, William Montgomery Clements, Henderson, George Washington Clements, Christopher C Clements, Andrew Jackson Clements
Daughters: Sarah (Sally), and Ana (Tabitha)
What I am trying to discover is why my gg grandfather, Leroy Settle Clements, was given his middle name. The family lore (of course) is that we were related to Mark Twain whose aunt was Caroline Clemens Settle (!) of Barren County KY. (Wife of Isaac Withers Settle, who was a brother to Thornton and Simon Settle)
Another teaser is all the Settles who lived in Gainesboro, Jackson County, TN—not far from Clementsville, TN where my Christopher and Polly Clements were living. Leroy worked at law in Gainesboro too. Mark Twains’ family even lived in Gainesboro for a time!
