I have come across Stephen S Selmes in my researches, but have never found out who his parents were.
Mountfield is only a very small place, and all my SELMESes were born there or nearby.
My dad's maternal grandmother was Maria Elcey Selmes, born Mountfield 1851.
Stephen is a name which recurrs many times in the Mountfield Selmes family tree, as are Philadelphia, and Samuel, my earliest confirmed Selmes ancestor being Samuel of Sedlescombe who married Mercy Baker at Whatlington in 1716.
I have many SELMESes in my tree if you are interested, and can find out who Samuel's parents were.
