I'm trying to place several Selfs into the correct family, but haven't had any luck so far. Beginning in 1850 (when the census records began including the names of all in the household) I've come across several Selfs living with other families. Several of these Selfs were designated on the census records as "idiot" or "insane." I'm trying to find out who the parents of these Selfs were.
One is Rebecca Self. In 1850 she lived in the home of James H. Sullins and his wife, Martha in District 14 of Marion County. In 1850 Rebecca Self was 30 years old, born in Alabama, and listed as "insane."
Another is Spencer Self. In 1850 he was living in the home of William and Louisa Cradick (also in District 14), and was 24 years old. He was listed as “idiot.”
Then we have Cyrus and Sabra Self, also in District 14. They were living in the home of William Mitchell. Cyrus was 13 and listed as “idiot,” and Sabra was 16.
19-year-old Nancy Self was living next door in the home of John Mitchell.
Mahala Self, age 14, was living in the home of Fetnah Bull, also in District 14.
Rounding out the District 14 Selfs in Marion county in 1850 is my 3x great-grandfather, Emeriah Self and his family, and 73-year-old John Self with wife Nancy and daughter Winnie. I assume John and Nancy are Emeriah’s parents. But who are the parents of the Selfs living in other households?
In 1860 I find a 55-year-old Rebecca Self (b. SC) living with David Burleson, 33-year-old William S. Self living with Hardy Burleson, and 30-year-old Silas M. Self living with William Burleson. All were in the Eastern District of Marion County (where my Emeriah & his wife Fanny Burleson still resided), and all three were listed as “idiot pauper hereditary.”
Any ideas who these Selfs were? Were they also children of John and Nancy?
And does anyone know who John's father was? I've seen him listed as a son of Presley Self and Amy Gunter, but Presley would have been only 14 when John was born. Not impossible, but highly improbable.
